Yasss Deb! You tell that SOB! About the basketball being 'cancelled until further notice,' some things are just more important than sports. It's true, sports and team activities can focus you and give you a sense of community and brother/sisterhood, but when you let the game become more than a game, you can get lost in it, and I don't mean in a good way! So I understand the decision Whitey made there. Nathan's gotta get his head right before he goes back on that court. Anyways, just my 2 cents

Heather

Nathan has A LOT of anger issues. The drugs certainly didn't help anything. He's definitely a WIP. I do believe he wants to be a good guy, so it's interesting watching him figure it out. I loved his vulnerability with Haley at the end of the episode. He acknowledges he's made a lot of mistakes and that he is not ok. Dan could never.

Yeah Deb is awesome haha. I love how she always walks the line of putting her foot down and loving her husband for whatever he is. But her breaking point was how he responded to Nathan. The fact that he didn't even have the thought to call her as soon as he was taken to the hospital is maddening. Deb is a great wife to Dan and he does not deserve it. She really makes me love her and hate her sometimes though because she tends to be too patient with Dan the last few episodes. He says the worst things ever about people and she just keeps brushing it off and tries to be understanding but her doing that basically enables him to be who he is. That relationship is so one sided us thinking she's strong for standing up to Dan FINALLY actually makes me feel like she's just been so weak their entire marriage letting him talk about Karen and Lucas and his own brother and whitey the way he does??? How does any spouse listen to their S.O. talk about people the way he does and not shut that shit down immediately?! I think she didn't want him as an enemy because any aspect of a fight with him is exactly what Dan would become. He is so selfish and stubborn that you get cut out immediately after you stop supporting all his decisions.

Heather

I agree that she's been a little weak in all this. I like Deb, but she's let Dan get away with too much, especially where Nathan is concerned. Nathan didn't become this way overnight or Dan for that matter. It's obv she works to get away from Dan, but it gives Dan more control over Nathan. It's great she finally stood up to Dan, but it does make you wonder why she hasn't in the past. I don't buy Keith saying it was to protect Nathan. She wasn't even there to protect him. I think she didn't stand up to him or leave with Nathan because she didn't know how. She was really young when she got married and Dan is a bully. Maybe seeing Karen and Lucas manage just fine without him gave her strength. She has admired their relationship since she first saw it.

Angelina Sargent

Yes!!! Exactly! I do think the writers kind of made her braver in her relationship because of her seeing Karen and Lucas relationship and their life. They may look like they are struggling financially but the relationship is real...Deb has always had money. They made that very clear. I think she is partially jealous of their relationship and she feels some guilt about staying with a man that treated Karen and her kid so terribly. She seemed to be afraid to be alone

I think two things play part here: 1) Deb was away for work a lot so she didn’t see much of Dan‘s behavior towards their son. 2) Deb herself is getting manipulated by Dan and once you’re in a relationship like that it’s hard to see the truth. But now she’s woken up and put him in his place.

he said it to Haley last episode: him trying to be a decent person is new to him and so it’ll be an adjustment. But him going to Haley at the end was a good choice bc he was getting zero support from anyone else.

This episode is such a turning point for Nathan. He basically hit rock bottom, everything finally got to be too much for him and he truly recognises that now. He's started to realise how bad Dan is for him. That he doesn't care about his mental health at all, so long as he's playing basketball and allowing Dan to live through him, he doesn't care. And he also has come to the realisation that Haley is who matters to him. Not his Dad. He's finally admitted to both himself and Haley that he is not okay. Of course, he's still got a long way to go, but he's truly realising what's important. As for Whitey cancelling Basketball for a while, I honestly think that's for the best. Yeah, it kinda sucks for everyone else, but he's realised what it's doing to Nathan and he's probably also worried that it could get there for some others. I think a break is a good idea. Because while he's nowhere near as hard on Nathan as Dan is, I understand what he meant when he said he's part of the problem. He puts the suitable amount of pressure on his players for a Coach, but it's still pressure. And adding that onto Dan's overbearing pressure, makes someone who is gonna spiral. He can see that and he's taking responsibility for his part in it all. Something Dan could learn from. It's good that Whitey isn't JUST blaming Dan, because while it's definitely MOSTLY Dan, it's also a buildup of everything. Dan, Whitey, the Team, the School. Everyone who ever puts any pressure on Nathan to be the best and get the Team their wins. Whether it was personally or not. I absolutely love that scene between Naley at the end there. I love that Nathan was able to say that some of the mistakes he makes are because of Dan, but sometimes they're a choice he makes himself. He knows he can't just blame Dan for everything because he does make his own decisions. But he also recognises Dan's effect on him and how controlling he is and realises that Dan DOES make him do some things and that at the end of the day, it's all Dan's influence. That's so important. That he's able to reflect on himself like that and not just blame Dan for everything. Because it would be SO easy to, but he wouldn't be able to grow properly if he did that. Like Whitey, he's taking responsibility for his part in everything. Again, something Dan could learn from. Dan is just awful though. He didn't care that Nathan wasn't okay, he didn't care that he was destroying him. He just needed to know that he'd be physically fine so that he could continue playing, and about the Scouts hopefully not remembering this. Basketball is the most important thing to him, and Nathan could literally try to kill himself and Dan would only care about whether he was able to play Basketball the next day. And the fact that he didn't even call Deb! All he had to do was send a quick text from the ambulance! (Because there is no way there was no ambulance...) He just needed to say "Hospital with Nate. He's fine. Collapsed." It would've let her know to get to the Hospital, what happened, and that Nathan was alive, yet he'd still be able to focus on Nathan because it was so short. Instead he just didn't tell her. She had to hear about it from Haley about half an hour after it happened. AND THEN HE LOST HIM! He didn't even see him leave! Like Deb said, he could've passed out somewhere. I'm very glad she kicked him out. She's right, Nathan's in danger as long as Dan controls him, and I'm so glad she was finally able to stand up to him for both herself and her son. Hopefully it's not too late...

I honestly love the Nathan character arc, because he's not going to become perfect overnight, and the first step to admit you have problem which I think he does at the end of this episode!!! It pisses me off so much when Dan ignores the doctor, I mean its bad enough that you pushed him so hard he felt the need to take drugs but them to brush it all off like it's nothing, also why whitey is my favorite, do I think he himself is part of the problem? heck no! a couch is supposed to push players, but needs a balance as well of caring and knowing when to back off, which I fell whitey has!!

Annie

I think we've finally reached the point where you could just stick the Dan sucks sign on the screen permanently - god, what an awful person.
