Also, surgery residents make something like 60k, according to Google. Interns make less. They don't start making the big bucks until they become attending surgeons. Yeah, broke doctors on Grey's used to confuse me too. (Any doctors here, feel free to correct me!)

Not a doctor (always wanted to be but life 🤷‍♂️), however do work in the medical field. And you are correct, Surgeons don't start getting paid really well until they reach Attending status. It also depends on location. For example here in San Diego the average yearly salary for a Surgical Intern is around $57,000.00, which sounds good on paper but cost of living quickly dwindles that down. Like the average price for a 1 bedroom is 2,100 or 600,00 for a house.
