Yeah, so you're not crazy, Travis. When you can't understand what they're saying, they're speaking Mandarin. They basically speak Mandarin when they're cursing (which is why they don't show the subtitles, lol). Also, this show aired on a major broadcasting company, which is the reason why they use the term "humped" in place of f#*&ed, which, once again, gets them around the whole cursing on TV bit, lol. So, it's funny that you said that this is movie length because there actually is a Firefly movie set after the series ends. Ironically that movie has the same name as this pilot episode (Serenity). The movie is around 2 hours long, though, so a bit longer than this episode. I'm not sure if I have a favorite character on this show because I think they're all great! I do have a least favorite, though. I'm not gonna say who it is yet ;). I'm glad you enjoyed the episode!

Omg the firefly fandom has arrived!!!!! 🥰 Humped = fucked They use mandarin to get around the TV guidelines of the time. Firefly is the type of ship, yup. This show was super low budget for the time (aka why it's bouncy) The idea of the show was a western in space which is why you get country vibes. I don't think it matters what year it is because it's like an alternate universe. Some of us can't help saying 'ain't' it is just how our vocabulary developed 😂 Jewel Staite has been in several horror movies you may have watched (she who must burn, the killing TV show, doomsday prophecy, mothman, after dusk they come, widow on the hill) Scifi sometimes make words up and sometimes use highly scientific words to describe things. I think you were just lost because you didn't know you were jumping into a sci-fi western. Most of us did the first time we watched this. 💚💙💜

I fucking love this series... the space cowboy works so well with captain Malcolm Reynolds... joss whedon is seriously a genius even if he is a Douchebag. He also did Dollhouse which is so fucking good. Definitely not as much as a cult following as this series.

Definitely a fan of this show! I'm excited to see what you think of it. It starts off a little slow, as it introduces the characters and you get to know them a bit, but once it starts ramping up, all the episodes are fantastic. I hope you enjoy them! And what I like about this pilot episode is that it really does give you a strong sense of every character. Even the ones that aren't leading roles are shown in more than just a little snippet, so you can see their personalities and how they behave. It really makes you want to know more about each one, I think. P.S. The language you didn't catch was Mandarin. The show is basically the future as if the U.S. and China were the remaining governmental super powers (so to speak), and those two cultures eventually melded together into one giant all-powerful "alliance," which is why the characters sometimes throw in some Chinese within their English speaking. Within context of scenes, most of it is swear words -- as someone else noted, to get around U.S. TV censors at the time (lol) -- but every once in a while they use other expressions (like Mal calling Kaylee "mei-mei" (which I guess means "little sister," or is basically a small term of endearment?).
