I once flew back east from LA and the plane began to head out into the Pacific. “Where are we going?!” I wanted to yell, not understanding why we seemed to be heading directly west. Eventually we did loop around. Just a fluke of the route I suppose. Boy oh boy, do I dislike flying.

LAX borders the ocean directly, and the runways all largely face it. Because of that most flights head out over the sea for a brief time before turning whatever direction
