A part of a comic commission many years ago.

This panel is a bit of a mess and it totally should be. But it was, at the time, just a small part of the most ambitious comic strip I attempted to do. And it ate up a bunch of my time but it was a pleasure coming up with all the little scenes that could be happening in various corners of this pic.

The story is about that guy in the middle, just a lowly agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. walking around during one of the various crazy comic book plots. I think in the time since this drawing, there have been three live action AVENGERS movies.

I haven't done a lot of major set pieces like this but I've learned a couple things about them. While your eye can focus on individual vignettes, your overall impression of the page should be strong. The composition should have a mix of large and small elements that it reads well at any distance. You start with the overall impression and then gain more appreciation the closer you get.

Anyway, I was just thinking of this because the webcomic "Kill Six Billion Demons" just released an INSANE page today and I thought about how I haven't quite gotten anywhere near as ambitious as that.
