I had heard positive things, but I wasn't ready for the quiet power, beauty, and sadness of this story.  And Johnny and Leo both gave absolutely killer performances.  I want more movies like this

This movie came out in 1993. Leo was 19 and Johnny was 30. This was Leo’s second movie. His first was “This Boy’s Life” with Robert DiNero. Great movie. Leo won critical acclaim for playing Arnie and was nominated for a Golden Globe and an Oscar. I would recommend a couple other Johnny movies if you haven’t already seen them. “Benny and Joon” where he plays an eccentric character and is brilliant (of course) and another movie Don Juan DeMarco with Marlon Brando. Juliette Lewis actually does an incredible job of playing a mentally challenged person in “The Other Sister” another great movie. Johnny dated Juliette Lewis for a few years after meeting her while filming this movie. When the actress who played Momma died, Leo paid tribute stating she was “The best acting mom I ever had”
