This one packed a SERIOUS punch. The reveal with Ford added so much sympathy/ complexity to his wicked choices, and I really really liked the idea of truth vs protective lies. Is it every ok to lie to a loved one? Do good intentions justify hiding the truth? ALSO, Spike needs to consult a vampire coach, cause he seriously dropped the ball here in my opinion haha

merry christmas to meeeee!! EDIT: Oh and er....to you, too, also :p

Nicologik

Really entertaining reaction to a good episode, thank you :)

Thank you. This was wonderful for Christmas. It was such a surprise for 2 episodes. I love this episode. It definitely gives you a lot to think about and I love the performances. Spike does have an immature way of doing things. Wonderful review. Your hair is looking great too :D Thanks again! Merry Christmas! 🎄

Ashley

Love this episode. Glad you enjoyed it. Seems like you are getting to know Spike and Dru better. I think Spike at this point does seem to be someone who rushes in without much forethought... but sometimes those can be worthy adversaries if you are surprised by them. Yes, we find out more about the not so angelic side of Angel and this would be a very tough thing to accept, but it was when the demon had taken over him, so you could say it wasn't really him doing those things.

Aw thanks so much, and it's the least I could do to thank you all for Christmas! Glad you liked it, and hope you have a wonderful holiday!

Hmm that's a very good point. If there is/ was a demon inside of Angel, to what extent is he culpable? Does he have the ability to resist, but it's just very hard, like resisting the One Ring? Or is it more like a possession where the demon takes over? And if that's true in vampire lore... then it opens up a bunch more questions for me. Like, shouldn't someone really pity every vampire that dies, if it's really just an innocent human being manipulated by a demon inside? I find this whole idea very interesting...

Absolute0

The whole thing with Dru being not well is a little tough to pick up on a first watch. There's a couple lines, almost as afterthoughts, over the course of her presence on the show so far that imply she was attacked by the mob in Prague before their arrival in Sunnydale, but survived. That's why she's still weak and recovering but was incorrectly believed to have been killed. Its definitely the sort of thing that can be easy to miss but it's clearer after a series rewatch. Cheers, Merry Christmas 🌲

There is A LOT of discussion about this during the show (and it continues in the fanbase even today).

Effie

I love all your questions Thor. All very valid and your fascination in this topic is why I so wanted you to react to this show :) From the lore we've heard when people are turned, the person's soul leaves, the demon takes hold of the body. The curse Angel explained in 1x7 put his human soul back into the body so his one is a special case. I've always understood it that the demon and Angel share the body and therefore the memories. Angel (soul) remembers what the demon did so he feels the guilt as his own. Other vampires don't have a soul (the human part). This is based on the lore we're given, hope that makes sense.

Watching this, I remember now how annoyed I always was with Buffy's constant misunderstandings and lack of communication with Angel (and somewhat vice versa). I don''t remember the other seasons very well, but I feel like there was a lot of that with all the characters that were emotionally involved.

Thor, it’s not a simple demonic possession. The human dies, as reiterated in this episode. A vampire is a demon using a dead body.

2021-12-25 23:39:04 This episode is probably one of my favourite Buffy episodes regarding themes. It’s incredible storytelling about truth & lies. Throughout the episode Buffy is adamant for wanting to know the truth from Angel, Ford & her friends but the more she learns, the less she wants to know. And by the end in her scene with Giles, I think she really realises the price of knowing… that sometimes the truth is worse & lies aren’t always the bad side. I love her line - “Lie To Me.” And it being the title of the episode of course. 👏👏 Great reaction. We are really starting to get into Season 2 now & I am here for it.

This is what I consider the first great episode of Buffy. It really takes the series to a higher level.

Finally had to join the patreon. You are getting to the point where almost every episode is good. Plus, you have reacted with three of my other patreon reactors. I'm just waiting for your collab with Ally now.

btw Giles sparing with Buffy is nothing like Giles fighting that guy in the last episode.. Buffy's a super-hero and he was just some average ass from Gile's past. So no holding back necessary, Buffy's just in another class. Buffy also had a chance to take Spike out, last episode. She held back to protect the children imo. But she had a good chance that she didn't take either.

The shot of Buffy where she is talking to Angel is just so beautiful, looking. down on her, framed perfectly.

I take this episode to be a sort of thesis for the show. You mentioned the theme of truth and in this context specifically about growing up and how much do you want to remain naive like a child and how ready is one to sometimes face harsh realities of the world. Buffy is learning things are more gray and more complicated than she expected. Secondly, there is a major theme around choice which is huge in this show. Growing up may be tough and complicated and you may be faced with tough choices. As Buffy told Ford, "You may not have a good choice, but you have a choice." Buffy often has very little control over the situations that come at her and she has to often make complicated choices. She still has control over her own choices even in hard circumstances just as Ford did (albeit he made a bad one).

I agree Thor, they're things I found myself thinking watching this show too. I think this is how the debate has continued on throughout the fan base over the years. There's a lot of gray around this that is worth considering and that can be tied to a lot of ethical issues in interesting commentary if you really want to go into it.

To me, this was one of the first really great episodes of Buffy. "You don't have a good choice, but you have a choice." I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, and I don't think it's a spoiler to say, that Episode 7 of each season tends to be a special "season setting" episode for the show. They're fun to pay attention to :)

2x7 is one of my favourites because it once again explores the grey area when you’re faced with life and death. I also love it because we got more back story with Angel as well as Drusilla. Yes Angel knew Dru’s family because he was obsessed with her but his obsession runs deeper than romance (if they ever did have something). Angel mentions that Dru was pure. I think part of that obsession was to either destroy or corrupt that purity. It’s interesting that you picked up that there is something more cruel about Angel’s past actions compared to other vampires and I do think there is potential for a deeper dive into the psychology behind that. The whole theme of truth, lies and choice was well done. The acting between Ford and Buffy was quite emotional (SMG nailed it again). Ford was wrong to put others at risk…but when you’re faced with death, especially so young, the fear can consume you. I can’t even say we can compare him to Buffy. Buffy is a Slayer…a part of her knows that death comes with the job. Obviously it still affects her as we saw in 1x12 but a part of her courage comes from the fact that it is also her “duty.” Every time she fights she is putting others first. I love how incredibly brave and selfless Buffy is but I also don’t think that those who are unable to make the “right” choice are weak either. I found Ford’s desperation is quite realistic. Thank you for your in depth thoughts on this one, I really enjoyed it. PS: it was really funny watching you get frustrated at the poor communication between Angel and Buffy. To me, even if they are a bit wonky I do think they’re a couple at this point. I do think Angel’s admission was a big step in the way of trust in their relationship though :)

Thom Purdy

The movie that Ford is lip syncing to is a TV movie of Dracula, starring Jack Palance.

This is such a GREAT episode! And I'm loving your reactions and thoughts. Thanks for sharing with us Thor. :) It's such a joy to experience someone experience and love this series for the first time. 😊❤ Also: Happy New Year everyone! 🎉

You've seen 2x08 now so I can comment on the fact that a lot of people view Halloween, Lie to Me and, Dark Age as a unit. All of them are about disguises, masks, lies and deception and how they can affect you. Specifically Angel and Giles. Both of them have been hiding some dark truths from Buffy (and us). Both of them are deeply ashamed with who they were and spend a huge amount of time cultivating a very different image for themselves. Both of them have had conversations with Buffy now where they have had to come clean. Buffy even turns away in the exact same way at the big reveal. And of course all this impacts Buffy, she is trying to work out who to trust and in two episodes in a row she's had cause to doubt her trust in both Angel and Giles. Things are definitely getting complicated for Buffy :/ And you called it - if only Giles had come clean, maybe things would have gone better and Jenny wouldn't be backing away :'(

i really like the commentary in the end about ford and his desperation, but i wonder why you didn't seem to feel the same about the inca mummy princess (calling her evil, ect, even while accepting that she was the victim of the situation). and maybe you did feel the same way but just from what i could tell your opinions differed, correct me if i'm wrong ofc. definitely not a way of hating on the video just thought it was interesting! also i think with spike, he gives himself the credit he deserves. he's very smart, not able to be tricked by angel, choosing to study/record buffy, ect, and he even beats her in the way of brute strength, as she would've been killed by him if it weren't for her mom. truly his only weakness so far has been his shortsightedness. he gets overexcited and he loses his head, which tends to be when he makes mistakes. even his decision to run away from buffy at the end of 2x3 and 2x6 shows that he knows how to pick his battles. even with his extreme impulsivity you'll notice that it doesn't often get him near to death. it thwarts his plans, but the way i see it, he doesn't care. his monologue right before killing the annointed shows that. he wants to have fun, and yes that shows he has an extreme ego and thinks that it's all just a joke, he doesn't even fear for his life, but it seems justified. he's done a pretty amazing job at keeping himself out of harms way while getting close to killing buffy multiple times. just my thoughts! i definitely get what you're saying though, he could be smarter about it but for the aforementioned reasons, i don't think he feels like he needs to bother. anyways i know it's pretty pointless to comment on old videos when by now you probably only vaguely remember this episode, but i really like putting my thoughts down on this show because there are just so many. ok thanks for reading:)
