Week 236 - MacArthur and Nimitz Go Head-to-Head - March 4, 1944

The American attacks against the Admiralty Islands are successful, but this causes real tensions between Commanders Douglas MacArthur and Chester Nimitz. Much of this week is taken up by planning and meetings on both sides, actually- Adolf Hitler plans the occupation of Hungary, Josef Stalin plans new offensives in Ukraine, and the Allies plan to reconfigure their whole front in Italy. It's all the prelude to an explosion of action. At this point in the war, Nimitz is desperate for a challenge. Yamamoto and Japan’s best have been too easy.

MacArthur was really ticked off over not having Nimitz's position. It was a really good thing for the Allies that he was not in the position Nimitz was.

Mac was his own worst enemy. It's unfortunate that his operational brilliance and his amazing ability to conserve the lives of his troops are so often overshadowed by his ego in the historical record.

If you know the history of Mac just after 1929, I would say either he should have been court martialled for the brutality in clearing the veterans of WW1 gathered in Washington DC asking for promised bonus.. And the lessons of WW2 indicates that he could have nip the butt on 8th December 1941 in the initial aerial fighting in Philippines. He changed the plan to defend the country and went to Bataan peninsula without gathering much resources (which was available) and thus causing lot of civilians and army men to starve, die and then surrender in Bataan peninsula. His military prowess was useful only for his political agenda. No doubt he lost presidential election to Roosevelt once

That's more accurate than I'd like. I do think he was overall more effective than Monty-- specificaly, effective for a longer period of time-- but lord did he piss everyone off.

Take a look at William Manchester's "American Caesar", really interesting deep dive into how both the Bonus Army and Bataan debacles came about. Not to excuse anything, but the Bonus Army guys were not trying to get the government to honor a promise so much as trying to modify one. Specifically, they were out of work and needed help, so they wanted their bonuses delivered early. Rather than help them, Hoover ordered the army to clear them from Federal property. It was a stupid and ugly affair.

JR Richardson

This criticism would be more valid if you could point to an American general officer anywhere who did better during that period. It was a learning experience for all of them.

Timeghost folks-- typo in the subject line, presumably should be "head to head" not "head to hear".

Really healthy conversation about Mac....
