205 - Mussolini Falls from Power - WW2 - July 30, 1943

The Allied advance on Sicily continues, though they're really gearing up for operations next week. The Soviet advances around in the USSR and in New Georgia also continue, with the enemy deciding to withdraw in both; Allied firebombing kills tens of thousands of German civilians, but the big news is still the fall of Benito Mussolini from power in Italy. With Mussolini removed from power, it seems like things will get really interesting now. Without the power of his spinning helicopter hand, one wonders where Italy will stand in the war now. Will they now stay with their German allies or defect to the Allies? Only time will tell...

I've been a Time Ghost Army supporter for a couple of years. Multiple times a week when I go on to Patreon I'm asked to let them mine my data. (already twice today.) I'm paying for this, I always Reject All and then Patreon asks me again, and again... At some point I'm going to say, "I can save a lot of money and end this manipulative invasive hassle and offensive annoyance...." We know if I ever 'Accept all' (invasions of my privacy) -- they will never ask again. I know TGA has little control over this behavior - Clearly Patreon doesn't care. How about alternative ways to contribute? I'll bet if I get annoyed enough I'll figure out a way. Thanks, Will

Hmmm... this has never happened to me, and I go to Patreon several times a week for three different providers. Just FYI.

DG Thanks - your experience supports my point. Because you've agreed to have your privacy violated, Patreon has what it wants, and will never ever ask you if you change your mind. (All this is minor vis a vis Patreon, but it's wrong. We're already paying them and they still want to steal and sell our privacy?)

13:08 Re US fighting in New Georgia, the bombers have Commonwealth markings. I don't know if Australian/New Zealand air forces were in this operation. They were certainly in the theater to the southwest in New Guinea.

Another great presentation. Hitler's a pretty smart guy. I'll bet he has correctly seen that Germany has no chance of winning the war and will resign so that his successor can open peace negotiations. I predict the war will be over before Christmas. Thanks, Indy, for a great run. Nothing now to do but a few wrap-up episodes.

Very much enjoying this coverage. I am looking forward to next week. My Uncle participated in the landing at Salerno, after having landed at Sicily. Heard many stories growing up. His father (my grandfather) immigrated to the USA from a small town in Italy called Angri. It is 29 kM from Salerno. My Uncle told me that his dad said "If an Italian soldier shoots at you, kill the SOB." (My uncles words.) That in my mind shows the degree of hatred that was prevalent in that era.

One thing I repeatedly heard from my parents and relatives is that in the early years of the war, Americans thought that they would likely loose. Your coverage helps me understand why they said that.

Probably the British and US troops fighting in the jungles of the Pacific islands have just about the most excruciating time. Thanks for another action pact episode with lots of development. The King of Italy will not get off the hook since he gave Mussolini to go ahead for war. He will get what's coming to him too.

A wonderful article as always, although about incredibly difficult matters. Thank you TGA. On a slightly different note, I find Indy's intros are truly brilliant. The combination of disbelief and wonder. although you know it's coming. I laugh and then gird my loins.

Question: there were 40,000+ at Pearl Harbor. How many had Dec 7 as their birthday? By averages it would have been over 100. What a birthday.
