197 - Banzai Charges in Alaska - WW2 - June 4, 1943

The Chinese defeat the Japanese at Shipai Fortress and the Americans maul the Japanese in the Aleutians. The Japanese are also worried about the possibility of the USSR joining the war against them. Meanwhile the Allies still plan to invade Sicily, but have no idea what they'll do after that. Good to see the front in the Aluetians being covered, given that it was often under covered or overshadowed by other fronts.

Much said about Anglo-American fears of a separate Soviet-German peace. Were there ever any Soviet fears of a separate Anglo-American – German peace? If not, why not?

If you find any information on the shipai fortress later on would you be able to do a special on it? I would quite love to know more about shipai if any additional information comes to your fore.

Really interesting insights in potential inter-country politics around potential peace / back-stabbing options. I never realised such concerns were going on, the eventual outcomes really seem to be shaped by these worries. These episodes are such a great resource for anyone who knew the general timeline of what happened but never took things further.

My dad was a 2nd Lt. patrol bomber pilot in the Aleutians during the war. He passed in 1966 when I was 5 yrs old. I don't have any 1st hand stories, but the VA was at least able to provide me a record of that. I do have some photos, however, of him with his crew in a group in front of their PV-2 patrol bomber on a tarmac somewhere. I guess I'll never know what role he played, but am confident that he did his part, the part that had to be done, in WWII.

I think Stalin was working behind everyone’s back. I believe those rumors of a separate peace with Germany were intentional and Stalin unfortunately got major concessions.

The soviets had many contradicting ideas. one of these was allowing polish prisoners in sibiria to join the polish army in the middle east. These soldiers arrived in cairo and many went on to fight in Italy.

I love how the big news regarding France is when 2 or 3 Frenchmen agree on something. There's no way Hitler would give up his "lebensraum" and there's no way Stalin is giving up Ukraine either, so a separate peace is really not possible.

Hitler knew by this point that he couldn't win against USSR, but peace in the east would let him concentrate his forces in France and Italy, creating a stalemate against the western Allies. Because of strategic bombing and blockade, he could hardly win that either, but he liked the idea of getting more time to come up with useful ideas.

A shame you can't give us more information about "The Stalingrad of the East". If you were to recommend one book on the Sino-Japanese front in WW2, what would it be?

The museum in Stockton has a restored PV2D. An amazing plane. I did a donor flight in 2012 and it was the first PV2 to land on Moffett field since 1952. Well worth a visit/experience. I can get you in contact with the museum people. I am Chewbacca on the forum.

And I always assumed he hated the Bolsheviks more than the Brits / Americans, so would have thought he'd try to make peace with the West first. But once the Holocaust 'cat' got out of the bag, he must have known he was toast as far as making up with the West. Just guessing, tho.

Thanks, Marc. If I get down to California, I will surely make it a point to visit the museum.
