The Deadliest Job in World War Two - WAH 062 - Month 29, 1943

Arthur Harris and the RAF set another record in bombing Germany, and the outnumbered Yugoslav Partisans show the Axis that numbers mean little when you’re clever. Piping Plover

Before watching, this has to be kamikaze pilots or U-boat mariners, right? (Will edit later to record my level of surprise)

Along with other roles such as being a crew member of a U-boat, an airman probably must one of the more deadlier roles in the war, each time often wondering in their minds if they would ever made the trip back home each time. Thank you as always for another episode of WAH. Never forget.

It was dangerous to even train as a WW2 airman. 15,000 US airman died during training. 26,000 died in accidents. While my Father was trading in the US, his training units lost some 20 airmen — including the instructor one time. He saw another 20 die as he witnessed two B-17s collide in bad weather.

A number of my Father’s friends had served in B-17s and B-24s. They all seemed to really appreciate the movie 12 O’clock High as pretty close to how tough the job really was. Also memorable is the 1944 documentary The Memphis Belle. It was filmed during combat missions during 1943. One film photographer was killed when his plane was shot down. They were going to use another plane originally, but it was shot down before it reached its’ 25th mission.

Thank you for correcting the pronunciation of Foča! Today's language notes: * The river is Piva (PEE-vah), not Pita * Sutjeska you almost got right (great job, it must be a tongue twister). It's SOOT-yes-kah, not soot-YES-kah - you got the phonemes right but not the stress. * A town name on the map is misspelled, it's Nikšić or Niksic, not Niksik Also geographically, while most of the Partisan area this week is indeed in Montenegro, that northwestern corner circled at 9:50 is in East Bosnia. May become more important, or not. Who knows? Thank you for the great coverage, keep it up!

They never managed to get Mengele alive.

minute 7:28, said 256 instead of 265 I guess Swedish is like German where you invert the last two digits when you say them. Used to confuse the hell out of me...

Overall fantastic episode!

Would be nice to have one episode about paperclip and those who got away. I saw once an Argentinian documentary about it and did not realise that they were living in luxury in southern Argentina and everyone knew about them.

When we studied the WWII Allied strategic bombing campaign in college, we had the advantage of 20/20 hindsight. Allied planners had constantly sought out key industries that could be targeted for immediate destruction, thus, theoretically, greatly shortening the war. The Ruhr Valley Dams and ball-bearing plants represented such targets, but the unwillingness or inability to conduct decisive followup raids meant the damage done was of limited effect. The Germans quickly developed workarounds and the war dragged on. Postwar analysis showed we had overlooked some critical targets that could have been destroyed fairly easily. There was even a recommended wartime target list created by Allied industrial and scientific leaders which identified these critical nodes, but had been disregarded for reasons I do not know.

My understanding was that part of the reason for the lack of impact by the allied bombing at this time was that German industry was still being converted over to a total war economy. This effectively would have meant that factories which were producing, say civilian commercial goods such as leather purses or farm machinery, were only now switching over to uniforms and tank parts. The changeover from producing goods for civilians to military related items meant that if a long time military factory got bomb damage or perhaps even blasted to bits a recently converted facility was just coming on line and replacing the capability and/or at least supplementing it. Is this correct ?

The Museum of Flight has a B-17 that I believe was used as the Memphis Belle in a movie made in the late 1980’s early 90’s. Museum is located in Seattle near Sea-Tac, but the big planes are in Everrettt
