178 - Hitler's Interference is losing the war - WW2 - January 22, 1943

This is a rough week for the Germans- their trapped garrison at Velikie Luki is liquidated, and their trapped army at Stalingrad is... well, it isn't going well for them. In fact, it isn't going well for the Axis anywhere this week, being pushed back or retreating in New Guinea, the Caucasus, North Africa, and on Guadalcanal. Berlin is even bombed this week as well. Great episode with lots of history covered in less than 20 minutes (not much less than 20 minutes but less ;) )

Every time the Nazis lose, it brings a smile to my face. Also, I have to admit, I'm eager to finally hear my name as the member of the week.

Silly history nerds....that misspelling was just to troll you I'm sure 😅 😂 🤣 And, Marc, it's fewer than 20 minutes, not less 😉

Another great episode! Amazing the amount of Soviet heavy lifting that US schools leave out of the history lesson

I am outraged because I really thought Germany had a chance up to this point!

Yeah you keep following Hitler the Germans will lose the war. That's the least of your problems because the Germans have been killing everyone and taking everything. The allies aren't going to be too happy with them when they figure out the extent of their murder and destruction. But oh well I guess. Keep following Hitler.

Indy et al. at the FührerHauptAmt: you need to include consideration of the U.S. Lend-Lease program in the survival of the Red Army, esp. in 1942. See the new book, "Stalin's War", by Sean McMeekin (New York: Basic Books, 2021. ISBN 978-1-5416-7279-6.), for this, and an overall view of WWII from the Kremlin.

Great episode as usual. A minor detail. Around 5:14 you mention Guards Mortar Regiments and show a drawing of a regular mortar. Guards Mortar was the designation for Katyusha rocket units, not regular mortars.

Another excellent episode.

Glad to be here, Marc! I signed up last summer, so I might have been skipped in the new officers mentions. I've only noticed the new officers being mentioned in the last couple of weeks.

Absolute War by Ralph Bellamy is a very good book. His chapter on Lend-lease is the best analysis that I have read.

It just occurred to me that "chemical" weapons are taboo unless the chemicals are set on fire first. It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world, eh?

Well, this IS the Year of the Tiger...2022, not 1943.
