We often get the question about how much people knew about what was going on in the extermination factories and concentration camps. It's a bit hard to answer... you have to define 'know' first, and then you have to try to get into the heads of people who are long gone, or for the few that are still alive, they would have to try to dig through the fog and distortions of memory that we are all inevitably prone to over seven decades. The only answer one can give is that the it was common knowledge, as in that the information was widespread and available pretty much as it happened. But how many chose to inform themselves? How many actively chose to not inform themselves? How many just simply weren't paying attention, perhaps not even able to pay attention? The world was after all at war. We will never be fully certain of the answers, but we do have some indications. The Western press of the time did record reactions as they published the news. In Germany the SS concluded that in their taste, far too many (by their reckoning most Germans) were aware of what was happening. But does knowledge, or willful ignorance confer complicity, especially when you can't do anything personally to stop it anyway? It's a difficult question that ethicists and philosophers struggle with especially since this war. In both Germany itself, and the rest of the world it's been at the center of the academic 'guilt' debate about Germans of the time. We don't pretend to have the answer to any of these questions, but as Sparty points out the end of this video; no matter what the answers are, they are terrifying. What do you think?

Death Squads Arrive in North Africa - WAH 048 - December 1942, Pt. 1

Despite Allied occupation, the situation of the Jews in North Africa hardly improves, in newly German-occupied Tunisia it deteriorates. Meanwhile, the world learns more of the details of the Holocaust - they cannot believe their ears. I think at the time, in an era when there was no social media and no mobile phones etc, it could have been possible they might have heard rumors here and there, but did not think humans were capable of doing such horrible things to one another. Never forget.

Reminds me of the story of two locals who were curious about Dachau. They were caught peaking over the wall and were given a 'guided tour', end result the Augsbergen gave the place a wide birth.

Now that was seriously depressing. I for one have sympathy for the US judge as I would find it hardpressed to believe too that the country that gave the world Thomas Mann, Beethoven & Bach would do such a thing. Such cruelty is just utterly unimaginable to a normal empathetic person even though we've seen it since WW2 in places like Ruanda for example.

Frightening. This should be viewed by schools worldwide.

I remember my grand-mom. She was living in the countryside in Germany while WW2 and only knew the Nazipropaganda in that time. Jews did not disappear.. there were none in her village. Others did.. but where and how they died they could not check. they were told at the battlefront or nothing. She was no fanatic Nazi and also no rebell, just a farmer child that knew Bund deutscher Mädel meetings and those were "so nice" she said. It was hard for her to accept the cruelties of the Nazis. In fact I guess she never really realized it despite she was told and shown afther the war.

The primary individual instigators have been punished or have died. But the ultimate BLAME for the events is diffuse. Humankind in general bears the blame, but how much blame can now be assigned to any SINGLE individual? Not zero, but how much? It makes me realize the truth of the Judeo-Christian teaching that no person is totally innocent. Maybe this was the intent of the perpetrators, and ultimately the evil genius of their plan. It was just so well thought-out, and they harnessed the existing lack of innocence.

Jews were probably spared in North Africa because there were no SS attached to the Afrika Korps. The logistics would have also been a problem.

It should be completely and absolutely clear that the regular people of the Allied nations had many opportunities to know what was happening to the Jews in Europe, simply by reading the newspaper every day. In the Yorkshire Evening Post on Saturday, December 19, 1942 an article ran on the front page with the headline “MILLIONS MORE JEWS FOR MARTYRDOM What Happened When Huns Seized Poland”. The article itself stated that 400,000 Jews had been sent to concentration camps in Poland, and that only 40,000 of them were alive – while we know that those numbers are far lower than reality, nevertheless they have the broad strokes correct. The article further cites the Soviet Information Bureau: “There is no atrocity to which the Germans do not resort to accelerate the- annihilation of hundreds of thousands of people. Individual murder is being encouraged by payment of special premiums. Every prisoner who is ill for more than two days is killed.” The Aberdeen Press and Journal of Monday, December 21, 1942 notes 2,000,000 Jews deported or killed since 1939, and says that five million more are in danger of extermination. It says that 85,000 of the 86,000 Jews in Yugoslavia were slaughtered. And it speaks of “the transformation of Poland into one vast centre for murdering Jews, of executions en masse by electrocution and lethal gas” and how “a special Extermination Commando was organized and trained in mass murder, and 10,000 people a day were removed from the Ghetto.” The Nottingham Journal had a front page article on Thursday, December 17, 1942, under the blunt headline “MURDER OF JEWS”. It quotes one Sir Andrew McFadyean as saying “Not content to go down in history as the arch criminal of all times, and as the most blood-stained of all conquerors, Hitler is determined to exterminate the Jewish race in his power.” He continues: “There are still refugees who could be rescued if adequate preparations were made in various parts of Europe.” I could go on. The numbers in the articles are imprecise. We today can look on numbers provided by researchers who have devoted their lives to tallying the lists of the missing and dead, while the people writing those articles had no such resources. But on the whole, the story those articles told was true. The citizens of the Allied countries were told. Unequivocally, they were told.

Am I mistaken or is the camera focused on the candle rather than Spartacus?

In the last half it is indeed focused wrong. We had a mishap halfway through the recording, and an autofocus setting was thrown off. We didn't have a chance to reshoot that bit. Miki did what he could to fix it in post.

Thanks for this comment. I wasn't aware of this public awareness (or at least the possibility) in allied countries. I just knew about the fact, that this was widely known in Poland and Germany after reading the book Der Kern des Holocaust by Stephan Lehnstaedt (I don't remember the exact percentages, but most people in Poland and a large portion of the German population could have known what was going on).

Not sure what you getting at? To whatever degree the allies knew and at what time period, your example is late 1942, how does that change the military situation? Nothing was going to be stopped until the invasion and that wasn't going to happen before 1944. My family was in Glasgow at the time and hosted a Polish officer who was ill. They all knew stories of atrocities but what were they suppose to do about it. My grandfather had already been killed in the Atlantic. It’s not like the Allies weren’t making sacrifices to defeat the Axis powers.

Peaceful Conquest - thanks.
