This week at TimeGhost we are both excited and stressed to be preparing one of our largest and most ambitious live streams to date. For those of you that missed it, we're going to be playing the game Hearts of Iron with Indy and few other faces from the TimeGhost crew at 19.00h CET Saturday the 27th of November. We will of course be taking a bit of time to stop and interact with all you. Are there any special requests for that day? Anything you'd like us to do in the stream?

On another note, this weekly episode is once again over 20 minutes long. If we can toot our own horns a little bit, we think that as well as more quantity, there is also more quality, with all sorts of new lighting, sound, and editing. Thank you all for making that possible.

170 - Bigger Than Uranus? - Mars - WW2 - November 27 1942

Last week’s counterattack was just the beginning, for the Soviets launch another giant offensive this week. And things look bad for the Axis powers in the south of the USSR. Meanwhile in France, the French scuttle their navy rather than allow it to fall into German hands. The reporting on Uranus, Saturn and Mars really does not disappoint. Indeed, what a week!

But if there is anything more to wish for: The Soviets have tried to hide the staggering losses at Rzhev (and Mars) for many years, even for decades, since these did not fit well into the heroic story of the Great Patriotic War. I mean, it wasn't until 2020 that Putin paid tribute to a newly erected status/monument at Rzhev... If there's any team that could shed more objective light onto this, it is the TG Army. I would be particularly moved if the role of (e.g.) Elena Kagan (later renamed Elena Rzhevskaya, by herself) could get some credits on that topic.

I wonder if you will cover the fact that during the Kokoda campaign supplies were difficult to get to troops because the painters and dockers union refused to load ships without being paid triple time like greedy cowards they are….. they also cried to police when soldiers decided to correct their attitudes.

I was looking for some gross jokes here but I see that the comment section is relevant as always 8)

If anyone really cares to see how the Russians of the last 20 yr have treated WW2 u need to watch some of the movies they have made since 2000 Some are very good My fav of them is Tank Yes watch a lot of them in fact everyone can get my hands on for free A lot of subtitles to read but then like to read

I agree, the Russians have some excellent movies for example the series on the women fighting with biplanes (they also fighters and bombers). If you have any favorites maybe put these on the Timeghost.TV forum as well if you would like it. Lots of filmfans there!

We have a few jokes on the Timeghost.tv forum including a clip with Niel DeGrasse Tyson telling Steve Harvey how to pronounce Uranus when older than 8 ;-). But the overwhelming part of discussions are serious there as well.

Before this, I learned of the Rzhev meat grinder through the Russian documentary series Soviet Storm (available in English, and in Russian with English subtitles on YouTube). The battles for Rzhev, alongside the Battle of Stalingrad, were described as the most severe bloodletting made by the Soviets during the Great Patriotic War (WW2 Eastern Front), and Rzhev being the most serious and futile. Nevertheless, the dearly price of blood paid would be converted into extremely valuable lessons, that as the war goes into 1943, the Soviets will make use of more and more proficiently.

Was it Gruppe Meyer or Scherer surrounded by the Soviet 3rd Shock army at 15:50? Not that I have ever heard of them before but the visual shows something different than Indy says. PS: Great sidenote that the Germans havent taken Pavlovs hous even by today :D

I always try to wait a day or two before watching the early videos, just to keep the "in real time" feel. Regarding Mars, however, I can say that I hadn't heard about it before (or if I did, so faintly that it doesn't ring a bell now). And in exposing this follow-up operation to Uranus, TimeGhost shows it's true worth. We're discovering and exposing the full story of the War, beyond the common narrative.

Operation Mars was gloriously successful meat grinder for Soviet Army, da!

I read Glantz’s book, Zhukov’s Greatest Defeat, several years ago. Great historian of Soviet military history. For that reason, he’s persona non grata in Putin’s Russia.

Another interesting facet of Soviet press coverage and official history of Stalingrad was “sniperism,” the glorification and exaltation of Soviet snipers. It was for propaganda purposes and led to exaggerations and downright fabrications. Spoiler alert: Vasily Zaitsev did not have a duel with the head of a German sniper school. Zaitsev was a very effective sniper but the story was a myth.

100%. David Glantz in mine as well as many others opinions is the greatest historian of the Eastern front of WW2. At a minimum the greatest historian of the Eastern front of WW2 from a Western perspective. Glantz has the advantage of being able to view the Soviet historical archive during the brief period where Russia was becoming a modern country and accepting the viewing of their archives by people from the West (just after the fall of the USSR). After Putin took over he stopped letting people view the Russian archives on WW2 saying it still was sensitive information for the security of Russia. Doing that put Russia in the same realm as China as the only 2 nations that still restrict information on WW2.

StarMediaEN on YouTube is quite a good source of english subtitled Russian TV shows.

Yes, Soviet Storm is really a must see... And, Rzhev/Mars kept (helped keep) Army Group Center from relieving 6th Army at Stalingrad out of the encirclement.

Are you saying Enemy at the Gates isn't found footage of the battle in Stalingrad? I'm absolutely shocked. It was a movie with the greatest historical contributions of all time
