This week at TimeGhost there is unfortunately a similarity between Erwin Rommel and our colleague and good friend Francis, who are both out sick and stuck in bed as the week begins. Francis, unlike Rommel, does not tirelessly serve the German Army, but rather the TimeGhost Army. He is one of our lead researchers and is always reading and writing for some kind of WW2 special, biography episode, or Out of the Foxholes response. He is one of the commanding officers of the TimeGhost Army, truly on the front lines of groundbreaking historiography.

Get well soon Francis!

165 - Showdown at El Alamein - WW2 - October 23, 1942

Could this be the beginning of the big break in North Africa? The Allies have the men, the armor, and the fuel... they just have to deal with the Axis minefields to try and get started. And the Axis are throwing ever more men at Stalingrad as the Soviets grimly hold on. Another roller coaster of a week. Just to let you know that I did receive the Timeghost email, but nothing from Patreon. As Indie says, these episodes are getting longer (which is great) with the extent of the coverage continuing to be superb. I know Indie is only the puppet frontman so well done to the team doing all the work.

Yes, mail notification from Patreon is still not working. Although it works for other creatores I follow. Strange but I got your e-mail and a great episode as always.

So here we are, the battle where my great uncle Arthur Bauer is wounded, captured and shortly dies of wounds in a POW camp. My grandmother the only person I know who ever met him, says she’s thankful every time she thinks about him that he was captured by Rommel and not the Japanese in New Guinea where was headed next.

Is it First Battle of Alamein (July 1942) or Second Battle of Alamein (October 1942 that was in this episode) when he was captured ?

Wishing you a speedy recovery Francis!

The German anti-personnel mines at sometime during the war became known as “bouncing Bettys”. My dad and his veteran buddies maintained it was because some women were adamant that they would not get pregnant if they had intercourse standing up. How this translated into a name for a land mine does seem to be a little bit of gallows humor.

I was told some time ago that you had done a special on Charles Upham. He was captured in the First Battle of El Alamein. Are you still doing the special??

I have to jump through more and more hoops to log on here. Get a text with a code to have to enter just to log on! Really?? What’s next? How many pictures have buses in them? This is absurd.

Now following ww2 week by week I understand why Montgomery is views as grossly overrated and I prime example of British propaganda hero making - he was apse

Anonymous

Only populist history narrative dismiss him as overrated. Montgomery was actually a very good general with several victories from Alam el Halfa , Second Battle Alamein , Medenine , Mareth Line , Tunisia , Sicily , Italy , Normandy , Rhineland and Northern Germany Campains and he forced Germans surrender first to him on 2nd May 1945 at Luneburg Heath , Northern Germany. He knew the army he commanded , what they could afford to , what their strength and limitations and built up accordingly. His was not a romantic folk hero tale like you might ask for but a successful proffessional general made all the way to Field Marshal rank in 1944 (four star rank) and army group commander.

Thanks for the support <3. The whole team does their part, but Indy still researches and writes these episodes himself. We'd be lost without him!

TimeGhostHistory

Patreon has told us they passed this issue on to their engineering team but we haven't heard back since. We hope the mailchimp emails just about suffice for now.

TimeGhostHistory

Sorry Herbert, we know it's super frustrating. We're doing everything we can to make sure everyone keeps getting their email notifications. Until Patreon resolves this issue there's little we can do.

Can Merdioglu. I’ve just checked and it was the 1st battle, not the second one my mistake. This is all the information I have on him. Arthur Bauer 2/15 battalion, 20th brigade, 9th division, 2nd AIF. Service number: QX574 Notable battles: Siege of Tobruk First Battle of El Alamein 11/8/1942 dead/ PoW.

I should point out I’m assuming they’re using British/Australian date format not American format.

I do enjoy being a member of the time ghost army. But some of the film clips you guys use need some work. Everytime RAF bombers get a mention a clip appears of a Avro Manchester which was replaced by the Lancaster.

Are you going to make a special about final days of Operation Uranus and Operation Sturn as the cauldron of Stalingrad was slowly starting to boil?

Anonymous

To the vast majority of viewers, I don't think it's an issue...
