This week, the Germans are pushing hard into Stalingrad. The invaders are deep into the city and have nearly broken through a number of times. Now however the Soviet forces are fiercely counterattacking, and the battle is reaching massive proportions. Zhukov direct an offensive from the north which costs both sides many troops and changes little on paper, but provide the kind of spoiling attack that the Germans can not afford right now.

In the Pacific the war is also raging on. Both on Guadalcanal and the Kokoda track, the Japanese fiercely throw themselves at the mainly US and Australian Allied forces, suffering huge casualties as a result. At sea however they are able to take out a US carrier.

It feels like this gets said every week, but it is clear once again clear that the bloodshed and horror currently underway is nearly unparalleled in human history.

You need to mention the cancellation of the invasion of Sichuan in China. Japan had scheduled it for September of 1942 and had been bombing Chongqing in preparation, but they ended up cancelling the operation in light of the difficulties suffered in the Pacific.
