Fall Blau continues, but the Axis aren't really sure what to do next. The Soviets they were hoping to capture aren't anywhere they conquer. What do you do when your enemy is trading space for time, you have little time, and they have lots of space?

Stalingrad Now a Primary Objective?! - Hitler's Chaotic Directives - WW2 - 151 - July 17 1942

The second phase of Fall Blau begins with second guessing by the Axis Powers and constant changes in directive. The Soviet Union's response to the successes of the first phase of Fall Blau is equally chaotic. Over in North Africa there is the question of it maybe ending in stalemate. Like the thumbnail this week. That Stalingrad sign puts things straight into perspective!

Lots of things going on. Al Alamein is coming up soon. I still can't get over how Stalin threw out the entire battle plan for Fall Blau. Thanks for another great episode.

Even though I agree that AH made a lot of wrong decisions, you portrait him as always wrong, maybe without stand and fight order in the winter of 41/42. No words about Halder, Von Bock incompetence (

Sadly for the Germans his being right that once seemed to convince him that he was always right.

When does the beer tie go up for auction? Would love to help "fill the tank" for a fashion statement like that!

Thank you for elaborating on the Citino-quote on Kleist's 1st panzers. I asked for this for an out of the foxholes episode a few months back - quite satisfying to get the answer here. Also, Indy's delivery during Blau II was spot on!

Hello Dmitri - I think the moment AH took the leadership decisions away from the commanders on the ground, all was lost for him. The Prussian way was to rely on the commanders on the ground to decide the tactics of battles. The Prussian trained military commanders were shocked at Hitler’s takeover of all military decisions.
