This week German armored spearheads are lunging forward into the vast open steppes of Southern Russia. However, rather than encircling the huge numbers of Soviet forces as they had done a year ago in Operation Barbarossa, the Germans are finding themselves capturing essentially nothing other than land. The Soviets are withdrawing, the oil fields are still out of reach, so for now the supply lines are just getting longer and the number of rivers crossed is increasing. Hitler doesn't like the way this operation is being run, and so begins reorganizing his forces, as has happened on the Allied side in North Africa, where German breakthrough is also risking total collapse of the British presence there. The catchword of this week, as Indy has described, is reorganizing - in response to anything and everything.

150 - Fall Blau - A Victim of It's Own Success? - WW2 - July 10, 1942

Adolf Hitler is not happy, and yet phase one of Fall Blau has accomplished all of its goals and done so ahead of the timetable. However, the Soviet Army in 1942 is not the same as that in 1941, and is not waiting around this time to be captured by the hundreds of thousands, and if things continue then the Axis might just be wasting a ton of gas to take a ton of empty space. A longer than usual video this week which covered the first phase of Fall Blau pretty well. Interesting points raised on the command and control differences that is happening in the Wehrmacht since December last year, with tighter control all the way from Berlin.

Enjoyed the episode while learning new things, as always. Thank you to the Time Ghost team. SUGGESTION: At 2:45minutes icons are shown comparing shipping losses vs shipping deliveries. The comparison would be more visually intuitive and powerful if the icons representing losses were of equal size to those representing deliveries. (The same thing occurred during last week's episode -- or maybe it was the week before.)

Nice Tie Indy, where did you get it?

My dad was in the Canadian Navy during WW 2. He talked about the Russia convoys- he never went there but said that he and his shipmates dreaded the possibility of having to do it.

By now it must have been obvious even to Hitler that the original premise of Barbarossa, that the USSR would implode, is not going to happen. Also now the Germans know that Japan will not attack in the East but instead is heading south, so the USSR can transfer fresh troops. The only thing that makes sense is to cut off the oil supply but that is a long way away. Was there any thought of negotiating with Stalin at this point?

When you’ve declared a war of annihilation, diplomacy is pointless. Stalin won’t go for it.

There's a 'buffering' wheel at 12:30. The soviets are *loading*!

I am happy you mentioned Citino. He has something interesting to say on von Kleist's 1st Panzer, receiving contradictory orders to move in lots of directions. Could you elaborate on that next week?

I think there was a Q&A episode on this on Tik's channel
