This week, we discuss the horror of an institutionalized continental network of systematic rape imposed by the Japanese armed forces. The victims of this rape are both women and girls, and each woman or girl can be raped several times per day. This runs parallel to an entire network of slavery of various groups of people that the leadership of imperial Japan has determined as inferior.

The horrific use of rape in war continues well into the 21st century and there are several conflict zones where this is currently unfolding. Rape also continues to be commonplace outside of conflict zones, and though women and children are clearly the primary victims, men are also raped.

Japan's Institutionalization of Rape – WAH 037 – June 1942, Pt. 2

During the occupation of South-East Asia, Japan builds a large system of institutionalised rape to 'keep their soldiers happy'. Meanwhile, Allied refugees from Burma find a safe haven in India, but for some, hardship continues. The problem for me is that we are no different from them. Take any of us, stick us in a time machine so we end up as a lowly SS private assigned to Dachau and we could easily devolve into monsters. A few of us might be brave enough to refuse and be executed, but, sadly, many of us would break.

I believe that they who have been victims of the inhuman treatment, described by you, Spartacus; will be for ever greatful to you. You try to help us understand what they have gone trough.

We probably would've joined the nazi party and fought for Germany, but weren't these camp guards specially picked for the work?

Marc Steenbergen Netherlands

Yes they were picked but also free to refuse and were giving maintenance jobs and such. It is a persistent myth the executioners had no choice, that also would make no sense as employing unwilling executioners would hamper “efficiency” and lead to breakdowns. There are a few reliable works on Reserve Police Battaillon 101, like Goldhagen, Hitlers willing execut

These videos are painful to watch. I can only imagine what it's like to create them. But every single time one comes out, I sit down and watch all of it. However unpleasant, these things must be remembered.

This is the first video I have been unable to watch. As a first responder I have seen the ravages of rape on an individual level, the concept of instutionalizing it was just too much.

It really turns me emotional.. empathy for the tortured and dead.. and rage towards those that try to relavate or deny these crimes nowadays where we all know it better..

I really appreciate the heart and effort that went into making this mini series. I can't imagine the mental toll of researching these atrocities but you are doing an absolute vital work in the current times where people deny these atrocities happened. Never forget.
