This week Japan finally breaks the under supplied and exhausted US troops holding out at Bataan in the Philippines, and their aircraft carrier strike force lands another set of victories. For both the Germans and the Japanese the question has now become: what next? Japan has essentially secured all of South East Asia, and Germany firmly controls Europe from Rotterdam to Rzhev. Both powers however still have significant challenges at their sides. Japan still needs to deal with the US Navy and US Pacific Islands, as well as British controlled India and Australia. For Germany, Britain itself is a dangerous island not far off German frontiers, and their control of Malta and Egypt threatens the Axis in the Mediterranean. This is not to mention German and Japan's largest, most challenging, and most complex entanglements: China, and the USSR.

So Germany and Japan both set out to create plans that will bring them the victories they so desperately need, hopefully by the end of 1942, and certainly not long after that. Which of their plans do you know of? Which do you think were the most promising for them?

137 - America Surrenders - The Fall of Bataan - April 11, 1942

After holding out since the beginning of the year, the American and Filipino defenders at Bataan can do so no more, and they surrender to the Japanese- the Bataan Death March for the 75,000 prisoners begins. Meanwhile, the Japanese carrier fleet launches a raid on Colombo and shipping in the Bay of Bengal, wrecking Britain's Eastern Fleet in the process and forcing them to move to African coastal bases. Adolf Hitler issues the directive outlining his plans for a summer offensive against the USSR that aim south toward the Caucasus. So much foreshadowing with all those big Axis plans this week...

In a week I join over 10,000 people across the globe to remember, honor those who died on the Bataan Death March. It’s (usually) a marathon through the desert at White Sands Missile Range. Was canceled last year for the first time in 50 years. This year it’s virtual. I’ll be hiking in the swamp roads of south Florida.

As always great show! I appreciate your mentioning Filipino participation. I struggle with the American lack of understanding of the persecution the US. inflicted on the Philippines after the Spanish American War. Not a proud moment in American history. Right up there with the treatment of our Native Americans. Perhaps you would consider a sidebar episode highlighting the Philippine struggle for independence.

I wouldn't mind such an episode, would be quite interesting. Not sure if this may fall under the scope of the Between Two Wars series though.

Another great episode! Loved the ending about Kido Butai (sic transit gloria mundi...)! Cheers from Slovenia!

So nothing about the Doolittle group sailing towards Japan? And aren't we about to see some Vichy territories jump to the Free French here soon?

That was a fantastic ending. Looking forward to seeing how Midway and Fall Blau go.

Is that this specific week? I'm pretty sure they won't just forget those things when they actually get to those days when they happen.

Yes, the USS Hornet left San Francisco Bay on 2 April with the 16 B-25B on board, so yeah that is a big deal missed this week. The raid it self happens on the 18th, but the ships left on the 2nd of April 1942.

Thank you for a great episode leaving us with the impression that the Axis are unstoppable. A very frightening time.

Samster

This must have been the Axis highpoint. But there are clear signs that they can't go beyond that highpoint.

Diego Almirante

Thank you for this episode, I had at least two grandfathers who fought in Bataan. April 9 is now commemorated as "Araw Ng Kagitingan" or Day of Valour in the Philippines.

Are there any plans afoot for a midway special?

TimeGhostHistory

The Midway week will have three videos. One on the day that Midway starts only about Midway - the regular weekly video where Midway is not covered - and a third video on the last day of the battle only about Midway. We're recording them tomorrow and then the editing starts.

Cool, Midway and its function as a flying boat stop is interesting. I booked a trip from Honolulu to Midway this September. Original date was June. I am getting pretty sure that September won’t work either. At least we have TG. :)

Hopefully we get a “fill in the blank” during WW2 series like they did for The Great War. The Philippines would be a fascinating episode. Also, “How to Hide an Empire” by Daniel Immerwahr is an excellent book that goes in to a lot of the history of the Philippines from 1898 until their independence from the U.S. He gave an anecdote that if you count the deaths of Filipinos as American deaths (they were American Nationals at the time) that WW2 would be the bloodiest war in American history; more Filipinos died during WW2 then total deaths (Union and Confederacy) in the Civil War.
