In the harvest season of 1920, a great deal of history is made in the world of arts and culture. The renowned Agatha Christie publishes her first book, the first electronic music is made, and Italy releases its first adaptation of Frankenstein.

However, as in much of life, all this art is heavily connected to the political developments of the year 1920. The firsts electronic music is a product of Soviet socialist scientific innovation, Christie's first book draws on inspiration from her years in The Great War, and the Italian Frankenstein is severely restricted by government censors and regulation.

In many ways, an episode like this is what Between Two Wars Season 2 is all about. Rather than focusing purely on the political and military developments of the 1920s and 30s, we can see how art, culture, politics, science, and much more are interwoven to reveal the Zeitgeist of the era.

Enjoy!

Hey Guys, great stuff. My parents were both born in 1921. It’s so fascinating to see the type of world little Blanche and Charles were coming into. And to see the forces that would lead them both into WW2.

Perhaps 'Italian Frankenstein' was among the films Shoshanna used to burn the Nazis in 'Inglorious Basterds' - it would be nice to think it helped the war end early in another timeline. Also, have a chat with @stuffofwar on Twitter, excellent interwar scholarship in that academic society!
