We have been absent for a week and we're back with the first video in our new upload schedule. We will be posting World War Two videos on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and a weekly TimeGhost History video on Wednesdays. You will get to see a preview for these as we wouldn't be making any of these without you.

This weeks episode is about the so-called 'Good Hitler Years', a stubborn myth that Hitler 'fixed' the German economy – often used by people to say that he wasn't all that bad at first. But upon closer inspection, the German economy in the 1930s is built on conquest, criminal activity, resulting in a non-sustainable stream-train on its way to inevitable war.

We have been filming last week, and are now back to writing the final Between Two Wars episodes and the first sketches of the new five-part series on the Indonesian War of Independence. It is very interesting and we can't wait to share our progress with you. But that will have to wait for a few weeks.

Thanks a lot for the support!
Cheers,

Joram

Why the Nazis Weren’t Socialists - ‘The Good Hitler Years’ | BETWEEN 2 WARS I 1937 Part 2 of 2

The Nazi economy appears to do well during the 1930s. But this is largely myth, as the German economy under Hitler is based on a self destructive, ideologically or selfishly fuelled irrationality driven by conquest and criminal practice. Can we just give it up for whoever created the picture? Well done.

That steam-train metaphor is apt and chilling.

I doubt whether Hitler understood economics or even cared. To him it was one more tool to fold into the Nazi arsenal. In this regard, he had much in common with many politicians. Has there ever been a government that operated for very long on the same sound economic principles of free enterprise that any efficiently run business must use in order to succeed? When we say "It's the economy, stupid", we're really saying it's about economic growth. If enslaving people to make a buck really worked, our prisons would be gold mines.

I've been to Singapore. What is the point you are making?

I wonder how much the Reich's contributions to Franco during the Spanish Civil War contributed to the economic problems.

Prisons are gold mines for those that profit from them. So are efficiently run businesses.

Saying "run a government like a busineess" doesn't make sense. Governments are there to provide public goods and solve collective action problems. Private enterprise exists to make a profit. One isn't better than the other, but it's never going to be cost effective, for example, to provide medical care to the elderly.

Singapore doesn't really refute the point. It is a modern mixed economy like most other states. 80% of the citizen population lives in public housing. Basic levels of medical care are guaranteed. The government plays a huge role in the economy when it deems it necessary. Singapore has low business and personal taxes, but that alone doesn't make it free enterprise.

Not where I live. We have state run prison here. The economy limps along and few people are prospering, and it isn't due to the prison. The cost of running prisons and the low morale of inmates and guards alike makes them undesirable atmospheres. In any case, I was speaking metaphorically. Free men produce healthier societies than slavery.

I didn't say govenrment should turn a profit. Unless govenrment owns the industry, it can't do that. I was talking about government needing to follow the rules of economics. It shouldn't spend more than it takes in. That money should not be squandered by spending it in ways that are harmful to economic growth. The simple fact is that without economic growth, government cannot provide those services you spoke of. I cannot think of a single service government provides that has not been provided by the private sector at some point in history, including defense. While modern governments rarely resort to using mercenaries anymore, nearly all support services and technology are provided by the private sector. What makes public housing more desirable than owning your own home? It is the American dream to own your own home. You said medical care for the elderly cannot be cost-effective. I'm not sure what you mean by this. If you mean it cannot be profitable, I would strongly disagree. It is a growth industry in the USA because of our aging population.

I love Indy's costumes for the videos - that's exactly how I want to teach history, giving a visual cue for changes in society and customs over time and space.

Out of interest, when does the new schedule begin in terms of week commencing? Please don’t take it for criticism, I’m just looking very forward to it 😁
