We originally wanted to make one episode on the Spanish Civil War. But when Francis and Naman started researching it, they soon decided to split it in half. The first edition of this due is about the many different movements, parties, actors and stakeholders in early 1930's Spain. The words 'Powder Keg' are frequently used to describe tension in smaller geographical areas, but rarely is it as suitable to use as for the Iberian Peninsula in 1936.

I also want to remind you that we highly value your support. Therefore, we want to give you the opportunity to help us determine what series we'll do after Between Two Wars is finished in March. We have made a preselection of six topics, and we're psyched to hear your preference! You can see that poll here -> https://www.patreon.com/posts/33300161

Thanks for the support!

Cheers,
Joram

How Left/Right Partisanship Starts a Civil War in Spain | BETWEEN 2 WARS I 1936 Part 2 of 4

Spain in the early 1930's was practically Europe in Microcosm, with numerous political and ideological movements clashing in debate and open battles on the streets of Spain. All of this worsened in 1936 as Spain slowly descends into Civil War. Awesome, would love to see a full-on week-by-week treatment of the Spanish Civil War (and the US Civil War) some day.

Awesome, here's a major, important conflict I feel like I've heard so little about, throughout my school years. Thanks!

Would somebody please identify the good guys in the Spanish Civil War? Everything I've seen and read over the years seems to indicates there were none. It was more a choice between bad and worse. Hemingway's romanticizing didn't help.

Oh shit! Not the Trade (con)Federation. I thought we got rid of that a long time ago.

Love the tie, Indy

Think of it as a smaller version of the Eastern Front in WW2. Neither side was "good", however, each side saw themselves as in the right and thus "good". Hope that helps.

No good side is correct but the comparison with the Eastern front is too simple in my opinion. The civil war is not "Fascist Vs Communist", it's much more diverse than that ideologically. On the right side, you have: * a few monarchists * a few fascists * a big conservative/catholic force (CEDA) and in the end, an opportunistic general managed to take control of it all. On the left side you have: * a few communists (and even inside the communists, you have the pro and anti stalinists) * the anarchists which is a huge force with more than 1.5M CNT adherents but a bit of a weird one as it's not a political party (it's never the less a political force, just as an example, their call to abstention in 1933 election was a big contributing factor to CEDA's victory) * the democratic socialists (PSOE) and radicals which were in theory the dominant force of the block, but got overwhelmed and were somewhat influenced by the only foreign help they got: Stalin's USSR * a lot of small regionalist parties (Catalunia, Galician, Valencian, Basque...) there mostly for the promise of more autonomy rather than ideology compatibility. You also have a deep divide between atheists (left) and catholics which is a big contributing factor in the civil war. Without this factor, you would not likely have enough popular support for the right side to sustain 3 years of war. In the end, if you really want a "good side", in hindsight, I would pick the PSOE/Radicals, which were the only political forces defending a democratic republic which is the form Spain evolved into in the end and the one most respectful of civil liberties. But again, that's in hindsight. Lastly, at the time, there were several tens of thousands of individual volunteers willingly choosing to risk their life to fight fascism, which is indicative the leftist ideals was more inspiring (but that's a personal interpretation).

Thanks. That was both enlightening and confusing at the same time. I prefer my wars more cut and dried, which leaves out Afghanistan and Iraq. How I miss the good old days when it was just us against the Nazis or the Commies. (sigh)

Love your channel - just became a member. Silly question on this episode. Where did you get the CNT skeletons that were sitting on Indy's phone? I must have them! Thanks and keep up the excellent work :-)

I really would like to know more. This conflict affected my family at the time and I know just what was passed down, but not much of the overall picture. Thank you for this episode!
