BRIEF

Starting as a warmup sketch, I found myself getting carried away. My original concept was to draw a quick art of my good friend's pony OC; Pizza Express with a twist.

Boobies.

SKETCH

When starting any sketch it is important to just get something down on your canvas / paper. Now, just throwing mindless lines down is not the way either. Having a shapes that depicts your intentional form, no matter how messy is what you want.

Very, very, VERY loose sketch.

Using the Lasso Tool I make small adjustments.

REFINING THE SKETCH

As the name implies. Taking the base sketch and cleaning up the form and adding details. I cropped the character to fit the canvas better.

The wings still feel like an afterthought at this point.

BLOCKING IN COLOURS

Changing the layer blending modeAdding a new layer below the cleaned sketch I block in the colours.

REFINE

Definitely the longest and tedious part of a paint. I would turn the opacity of the sketch layer to aout 20% - 30% and change the Blending mode to Multiply.

Then Merge the blocked colours and the sketch layers together.

Using the Eraser I would carve out the outlines and paint as I go. Keep in mind that the white background is on a separate layer.

At this point for this piece it was easier for me to remove the hair completely and add on a new layer. It allows for more control and editing.

NOW WE JUST ADD DETAILS, REFINE AND REPEAT.

NOTE: KEEP YOUR DETAILS THE SAME.

It is a good idea to have the same level of details and quality throughout the same picture. Having areas that are more refined or crisp in their details will look out of place or draw unwanted attention. This is fine if you are wanting attention to specific details or places, like the face.

The checkered pattern is painted rather then using the hard edges of a shape. Though 'messy' on their own, they fit more comfortably in the piece as everything else is painted as well.

AT THIS POINT I MOVED TO ANOTHER PROGRAM. I AM STARTING TO LEARN PAINT CLIP STUDIO AND THE PAINTERLY BRUSHES ARE SO NICE.

I blocked out the wings on a separate layer.

Adjusted and cleaned the hairline to make room for the baseball cap. Added a pony tale.

To finish up I brought the image back into photoshop and used the Adjustment Layers to tidy up the colours.

Sadly, I was kinda in the zone at this point and forgot to get screen captures. My bad.

FINAL ART

CONCLUSION

Starting as a simple doodle, this one kinda took off. Wanting to expand my abilities in digital painting, I took the opportunity to practice.

This time around I hand picked colours for the lighting and shadows rather than relying on Layer Blending modes.

I do not like the wings. I tried something new and it didn't work out as well as I planned. It happens.

Overall I am pretty happy with this, I mean it could be better but it's all in the process.
