This episode will never not be hard to watch 😂 in the words of a wise man "He's white knighting the girl in front of actual white knights"

Mitschiro

The embodiment of cringe. I remember the first time i watched it, i had to pause like 5 times. Today it's down to just 2 times.

Brandon Miller

This episode is soooooooooo uncomfortable and I absolutely love it. Subaru is one of the most loved and hated protaganists in anime and you are starting to see part of why he can be so hated.

KenthalasAT

Idk if you guys are aware of this already, but Emilia's VA is also Ai from Oshi no Ko

Re:Zero finally begins! Great discussions.

This episode is so well done, first time I saw it I felt so uncomfortable and it really made me think Subaru was an idiot, but after rewatching this show many times I started to see that he was never supposed to be this perfect guy who saves everyone with some super power, he's a teenager, who lived in his room for a couple months (rarely leaved only for groceries) before being transported in this new world, then he unconsiously forms a connection with the first person that helps him out and falls in love with her, ofc he doesn't have any emotional intelligence, and that's so relatable for a 17 years old, you guys analized it so well, it's crazy to think this is the first time you're watching this series, most people hate Subaru for how he acts sometimes, like I used to, but eventually he will grow on you guys. By the way all the characters in this show are written so well and I love them. Thanks for reacting to this series Ben and Anna <3

Clément

Restart and change fate because something awfull happened is one thing but restart just because you acted like a total jerk and it could give you a chance to just try something diffferent is totally another one.

Subaru is just so frustrated and fatigued at this point. He was just beaten, humiliated, and told he was not worthy of Emilia when no one has knows all he has went through for her and everyone else. Then to top it all off, she called him selfish to his face, and was told she doesn't get it. And he knows he can't tell her. He was definitely wrong for what he said, but it's hard to fully blame him for me.

Readster

Something the anime leaves out is that Julius actually beat up Subaru to protect him. Basically the other knights were so offended by his behaviour that some of them were potentially going to kill him. Julius violently (but safely) beating him made the knights feel bad for Subaru and lose their anger. Julius was personally dishonoured and suspended from the castle guard for this. It's a shame they left that scene out (though it'd probably kill the pacing) because it completely recontextualises his character up to that point.

Jacob

I can’t honestly blame him fr because my guy has been though more trauma than most people will ever see in a lifetime. But he was kinda dumb for grandstanding in front of the knights. I can’t hate him to much considering all the factors tho

Axl Jones

I wouldn't say the anime leaves that out, it's mentioned later

Clément

Imo it's not just what he said but all the thing he did during the whole episode. He totally misunderstands his relation with Emilia and he was actually totally selfish by coming to the royal selection and by making a scene in front of everyone, when in fact he had nothing to do here. He act like a little boy who want to be the center of the show because he's to affraid to being left on the side. And worst of all he totally snaped in front of the person he esteemed the most.

Jay Craig

It's pretty clear that Julius sees 'something' in Subaru in the throne room, even if most of what Subaru does and says pisses him off. He's genuinely moved when Subaru tells him that he's still standing there because Emilia is special, and he even acknowledges that he accepts Subaru's reason as valid.

Felix brings this up later so it's not exactly left out of the anime (and so you're getting a bit ahead of yourself here). Though Julius brushes Felix off and plays it like that wasn't his intention (and it's left more ambiguous). Are you saying the light novel makes it more concrete that Julius beat him to protect him?

Readster

Yeah after this confrontation between Emilia and Subaru the light novel has an additional chapter of Julius and Felix with the Knight's captain where they go into far more detail about why Julius did what he did.

Subaru is just obsessive as hell and sees himself as the protagonist. Emilia also has insecurities and feels the need to be nice and fair to everyone to be accepted. It is the only reason someone as obsessive as him got chance after chance.

Man I really wonder how many people in these comments watched Season 2, because a lot of people are saying Subaru thinks he’s a hero or feels superior to everyone around him. That’s not the case, he has a massive inferiority complex. That’s why he acts out the way he does, in general. That complex is made worse in this world, where seemingly everyone around him is far more capable than he is.

Night Sterling

I think its less that he thinks he's a hero and more that he thinks he "needs" to be the hero and that in his head he needs to be in Emilia's business all the time otherwise things will go wrong. I'm not saying that he doesn't have an inferiority complex but he definitely has a hero complex.

DJ Hunter

Felt for President! She’s the most honest politician I’ve ever seen.

ThaDoubleB

He’s obsessed with saving Emilia because he cares a lot about her, but more than that, it is the only thing he has worked at and accomplished at all recently. Subaru thinks he is totally worthless outside of his return by death. He believes literally dying is the only thing he has to offer people. He actually doesn’t believe he’s some great hero, quite the opposite, he believes that being able to protect her with his unique power is the only thing he is good for. When that is taken away, he loses it and lashes out, because he lost that little bit of self-worth he had. Subaru’s very real in the fact that he covers up his flaws with a lot of bravado and humor, and he ignores the issues he is struggling with until he is forced to face them. I think that’s why so many people get confused with why he does the things he does, but a certain episode in S2 really explains where he gets his inferiority complex from.

Noctislolig

Damn I love your reactions so much.

XDrakeX

Dont worry about it. Subaru has Rem now after all :)

Daniel Borrego

the thing about subaru is he doesnt really think of this as the real world yet. he thinks of everything her in terms of manga/light novel/video game and he is the main protagonist. so he should be able to beat julian. the beautiful half-elf princess is suppose to fall in love with him. he treats people in this world as npc's instead of real people.

26:30 Highly recommend you the 2nd opening of this season by myth and roid with the lyrics bc it’s exactly talking about that, him wanting to restart after everything that went down the past 2 episodes
