I think you nail down pretty well how the magic system works around Ubel. I really think that the translation could lead to the wrong conclusion, though. Visualization is fine because it deals more with intuition, but not really imagination which seems too fuzzy for the magic system. There is still a plot hole in the defensive magic when imbued into an object (cloak or hair). If a basic defense spell stops her cutting magic, how does it cut when the magic is imbued into an object ? My hypothisis on how it could work is that the spell can directly cut the object but not the spell on it. This would means that there is not real continuity in the slash of the spell, only that something that could be cut in an area is cut, but nothing else. The phrasing on the defensive spell could make this hypothesis works, because the cloak or the hair are not strenghten by the spell, only protected by something around it.

I don't think it's a plot hole, but rather pure defense magic is something she can't easily visualise cutting up because it's just pure mana. That's why reelseiden doesn't go through it usually, but as soon as you imbue something with it that she can see herself cutting, then the defensive spell on it basically doesn't matter anymore because she doesn't even think about it. As Sense said, her mind doesn't work like most people, if you are a mage the first thing you see is the defensive magic, but if you are Ubel the first thing you see is hair, since magic is the world of visualisation and Ubel can very clearly see herself cutting hair it just works. She basically delusion-powers herself into ignoring anything that goes against her base level logic.

All these amazing test takers are out here shooting basic blasts and attacks, meanwhile Frieren is summoning Golems, creating Black Holes, shattering reality, and summoning fire from the Depths of Hell. :D She's truly on another level.

A bit late to the party but around 38:20 when you both started discussing Fern saying "this isn't like you", it seems like there is a misunderstanding about why Himmel scolded Frieren about using flashy spells when fighting Aura 80 years prior. Himmel wasn't telling Frieren not to ever use flashy spells. It was specific to their fight with Aura's puppets. Because they were quite literally the corpses of humans. Himmel didn't want to see those human remains be blasted to dust. That's why Frieren handled her second confrontation with Aura's puppets differently (not even using Zoltraak when engaging them) and instead used a dispelling magic which would obviously preserve their remains. Graf Granat even expressed his gratitude for that since those that died could have proper burials. So Fern saying "this isn't like you" had nothing to do with Frieren's use of flashy spells. Otherwise she would have had a disapproving frown the whole battle as she witnessed both Frieren and the replica use these immense spells. What Fern was talking about was immediately explained when she followed with "you've left yourself wide open". That's what Fern was lamenting about as someone else had commented earlier.
