So for time period context. Paper is super expensive in this point in time. So peices of wood and such are used by poorer ppl and also for less important writings.

On the concept of what makes a good adaptation, I have to say that you can't judge without having read the original. It's entirely possible to create another work based on the original that is still well done on its own but not a good adaptation of the source.
