i remember watching the Dai Li stuff as a kid and getting the feeling that there were some really dark implications going on, that i was too young to understand… like probably darker than what it actually was.  Nothing specific, just the vibes were really scary in that sort of "eldritch unknowable evil" kind of way. i felt the same way about Secret of Nimh…

Avatar and Legend of Korra were made by the same people. The creators worked on both these show and were on the live action team until they left for creative differences from the live action adaptation. Korra is very much tied to this series (Avatar) so you still got a lot of episodes to go :).

Don't know if anyone said this but Avatar Kyoshi was the one who founded the Dai Li. They were suppose to protect the Earth kingdom but over time became corrupt.

FUN FACT: The creators of the series planned for Jet to die there but they couldn't say it out loud in the show. When Longshot drew his bow and aimed it at the other side of the room when the rest of the group left, it was supposed to tell that he mercy killed him with the arrow in his head as the others left him.

From what I’ve understood over the years is that they initially planned on having Longshot mercy kill Jet, however Nickelodeon will not allow the explicit depiction of a child’s death. But what we DO see is Smellerbee fixing Jet’s face, assumingely closing his eyes to lay him to rest.

Honestly, I never even noticed that Longshot was facing away from Jet. I just saw him knock an arrow and assumed that the mercy kill was the next thing that happened, just off-screen. I was a bit confused when I learned that others were confused by the scene. Just one of those times when the fact that I'm really not very observant at all when it comes to animation made a show work far better for me.
