Iroh and Zuko are my two favorite characters in the show. Also, since Iroh was a general in a war trying to subjugate all the other nations, I don’t think he was training with them, just studying their bending. I think being a general/conqueror was always against his nature for the most part and the death of his son sent him over the edge. Not a spoiler just my inference

Courtney

One thing that I think is super interesting and was completely lost on me. I watched this show like countless times and I always assumed Zuko was screaming at the universe, fate, god, some kind of nebulous force, but he’s not. Zuko is yelling at Ozai. “You’ve always thrown everything you could at me, I can take it, and now I can give it back!” Iroh describes lightning as being like Azula, but lightning is also similar to Ozai, who Azula takes after. Zuko is attributing lightning to his father, and wants it to strike him so he can throw it back, prove himself. But the lightning won’t even strike him anymore, it doesn’t even acknowledge that he’s there.

Kendorable

I feel like we can consider Iroh an "honorary Avatar", he has all the wisdom, respect and spirit of the avatar.

Kemi Stanton

I think it's very very cool that y'all are speculating on benders studying other cultures to expand their art! If you pay very close attention to the avatar group, being so diverse actually does have an effect on how they fight (Katara waterbending with the fighting style of an earthbender for example)! Which was so crazy clever of the animators to think about.

William Timmins

Everyone should have an Iroh in their life. Or be Iroh to someone else. LOVE HIM

zimXzombie

Damn bro honestly every single character is S tier but Iroh stan through and through

Seraphem

Yeah, top three S tier characters are easily Iroh, Toph, and Zuko. Also I can't not see that ending scene and not have the mental image of the joke SF Debris made in his review, of after screaming himself hoarse at the sky and not getting hit, Zuko finally starts climbing down, only to THEN get hit by a bolt of lightning, because that's just how much the universe loves messing with him.

Shawn Oxley

Iroh is easily the fan favourite then definitely toph

Golden Witch Beatrice

A cool thing about Iroh’s speech about the various elements and how one can learn from them to adapt to their own bending style is that later in this series it’s subtly shown to happen for the main characters. The main example is that Katara can be seen using earth bending forms in some fights. I won’t say when cause spoilers but it’s a nice thing to look out for in the future. PS: you have to really look for it cause no one in the show comments on it at all

logan

Zuko, Iroh, Tooh, aang are usually top tier

rrrebo

Iroh is god-tier. Not just in this show. Everywhere. God. Tier.

Blitz Cam

I think there are a few options to who Zuko is screaming at, and most likely is a combination of them. But yeah his sister and father are definitely 2 people that the lines could refer to. And this is likely a conversation that he has wanted to have with his father/sister and whoever else, but didn't have the chance to earlier in his life. Likely because he wasn't strong enough since he lacked his sister's natural talents, but mostly because he was afraid of his father to confront him. Of course more can be added to this discussion later in the series.

Blitz Cam

Yeah I think more can be added later in the series, as more is shown about Iroh, but I think in general as a character, Iroh even if he did conquer others, he likely wouldn't destroy their cultures, and would instead offer them tea or something.

Blitz Cam

Top 3 have to be Zuko, Iroh, and Toph. Picking one of the 3 as a number 1 is difficult. Probably because each character you could probably relate to more at a different point in your life. Toph maybe more as a kid/teen, Zuko as a teen/20s, and Iroh as an older adult. But yeah that's one thing I like about Avatar is there's a good role model character for each age group, and also some characters that might not be the best role models for each age as well.

Stash Jones

I think I only just realized why Toph seems so pissed when Aang jumps out of the way of the rock. I never thought long enough on it to examine Toph's character, but thinking back, she was probably so pissed and also definitely wasn't planning on stopping the rock because Aang had everything down perfectly. It never occurred to her that he'd back out when he had everything going for him in this particular setup, but his lack of confidence had him pull out at the last second. I think I'd be frustrated with my student, too, if he exhibited everything correctly and tried so hard in our practices only to jump out of the way when he was fully prepared to tackle the Big Thing head-on. In fact, it happens sort of often. I'm a writing tutor who teaches every other semester, and when a student I've worked one-on-one with just ignores everything I taught them, it's super frustrating to see a paper that spits in the face of my lectures and handouts. I wouldn't go so far as to say, "you should've let the rock squash you," since I'm an adult (and Toph is a tough-as-nails fictional 12-year-old), but I can definitely understand Toph's annoyance much better now--or at least see the potential layers in it.

Demi

Iroh is definitely a GoAT character love that old man, though as for favorites choosing between him and Toph is tough.

Demi

Also really like Azula she's probably my favorite antagonist.

SweetCandle

Toph: Stop the rock. Aang: Can't stop the rock. Toph: You can't stop the rock? Aang: Can't stop the rock!

If you haven't seen season 3 don't read this next few lines (It's not exactly a spoiler, but it could ruin a joke) 4:58 I can't wait until they get to the Emerald Island Players, and I hope they remember what they said here

TEAM IROHHHH

Dotty Davis

Imaginebreaker7

For me I'm sorry to say that Iroh is not my favorite character... He's my second favorite after Toph. After that my list keeps changing based on my mood there are too many amazing characters.

Anonymous

Now that you've seen every kind of bending style, as you may or may not have noticed, each type of bending is based off of a real life martial art style. The interesting thing about Toph is that she uses a different martial art style than the other earth benders, yet seems to be trying to teach Aang the more mainstream style of earth bending. You can look up the specific martial art styles yourself, but I just found this interesting, considering Toph is Aang's teacher.

sj4iy

Iroh is amazing, but my top three are: 1. Zuko 2. Sokka 3. Aang I think these three characters have some of the best development in the show.

IansPoorChoices

GOOD ONE BOOM a rock and iraq LUL

matthew james Stromberg

Iroh is no where near s tier he’s beyond any tiers he is the most wholesome person ever

Amy Petty

It's funny that you guys mention that Toph has senses like a bat. Because there actually IS such a thing as human echolocation, and it has been demonstrated IN blind people.

Connor Stevens

Oh my God! So many years layer & I'm just realizing the sarcasm immediately came back too! 😅
