Patreon Exclusive. Joshua and Ryan talk about how, without constant vigilance, the things we own can end up owning us, and they answer the following questions:

Are we still doing the right things if they can’t be held up to scrutiny? (05:23)

What does minimalism illuminate? (36:06)

How do I appropriately and tactfully address my in-laws giving our family things we don’t need or want? (44:24)

Why do some people force their ‘love language’ on others? (49:33)

What does it mean to “get to the ‘why’”? (50:46)

At what point will my record and CD collecting be considered hoarding? (51:55)

Is it possible to have a healthy relationship with a storage room? (54:40)

If my film collection is beginning to feel burdensome, is my bar for what I hold dear simply not high enough? (1:00:35)

If we have a hobby—like gardening—that requires us to collect things, how do we create boundaries and how do we determine what’s enough? (1:03:46)

How do I stop my impulse to buy multiples of items that tend to wear out quickly? (1:07:27)

P.S. will pre-ordering from Amazon be as helpful as going through your website? I want to contribute in the best way possible. ☺️

Nicole Susanne Dreyer

I would like to know that too. I pre-ordered through Google books but if that is not the good way please let me know.

Something struck me at the beginning of this conversation because it was the second time in about I week I’ve heard reference to money being the root of all evil [~0:13:10]. Now, JFM correctly challenges this notion by saying that money is NOT the root of all evil, but I thought it might be helpful to look at the full verse: “For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (1 Timothy 6:10, KJV translation) Sadly, it seems that most people only remember the “money is the root of all evil” portion of this verse, but even when it was originally penned, the author recognized that money itself was not the root of evil, but the love of it was, and pursuing that love has led people to all kinds of sorrow and misery. This thread I think leads nicely into this week’s segment on tranquility. All that said, it would seem that even the Apostle Paul himself would have endorsed the message of The Minimalists—“love people, use things.” Keep up the great work guys! 😁
