Patreon has been bugging me for the past week to activate this on my page, and it makes me wonder .. hmm .. why would they need to get a years worth of money right now instead of waiting for it to trickle in at the normal rate?  Gee, I wonder.

I hope you've all saved the url for my ko-fi page.

The promo material I've been sent claims that their marketing research has discovered a certain percentage of patrons who want to pay for a whole year in advance.  I have no idea how this will work in practice, but the thing is, I don't want to get a whole year's pay in advance because I'll spend it all at once and then be broke for 11 months.  But enough about me, let's talk about you.

Keeping in mind that an annual pledge implies a level of confidence that this website will actually continue to exist for another whole year, how many of you are interested in doing this?

I barely have the money on a month to month basis to pay for my $50 pledge. theres no way I have $600 just lying around burning a hole in my pocket .Thats a bad idea all around. creators might take money up front and then burn out. Say you give someone a years worth of pledge and they stop posting 2 months in.You could be out 10 months of pledges. Sounds like a cash grab to me by Patreon. I have doubts they will even be around in 2021

I would have no objection, but neither do I have any enthusiasm for the matter.

I'm extremely skeptical of it as well. While I have no issues with supporting on an annual basis, I personally couldn't afford something that costly and it doesn't sound like they are thinking about that kind of thing at all.

Don't really see the point of it unless the artist provides some kind of bonus for an annual pledge. If someone wants to be generous, they can always bump up their monthly pledge.

not interested. the whole advantage of month to month is, if something happens either on my end or the artists, I can stop my pledge till such a time that it can be picked up again.

I read the FAQ article about it, and although in light of the recent lawsuit the timing of this seems more than coincidental, it looks like they've actually been planning an Annual option for a while. What I'm skeptical about is their claim that any significant number of patrons would want to do this. I myself would not want to pay a yearly lump-sum .. and as I said above, I do not want to GET paid in a yearly lump-sum.

It makes a little more sense in the lower-priced tiers, and one argument in its favor is that the larger single transaction would see less deduction of money-handler (paypal) fees. I would theoretically get more of the money, but I prefer it coming a little bit every month rather than all at once.

tegerio

There is no mechanism for installing special Annual Member rewards. You'd be paying for 12 months of an existing reward tier. The incentive for doing so is that I can offer an Annual discount. Unless the savings in transaction fees turns out to be larger than the discount, I don't understand why I should do that though. I'm barely making minimum wage on Doodles as it is.

Well, if I activated this, it would still be optional and you'd remain on the normal monthly billing schedule unless you CHOOSE to go annual. At the $2 Saga level it almost makes sense, because $24 isn't too much to pay, and even $48 is manageable .. but I have to say I would rather get $4 every month than $48 once a year.

You probably do not need it... it's Patreon that needs the money. They just started a big lawsuit against some ranting nazists that are angery that they are not allowed to spout nazi stuff on patreon's platform. I mean patreon only took out posts regarding setting people of color on fire and killing jews. But you see? They were only "ironic" because the original poster is a comedian, the fact that his audience did not enjoy those things ironically, but basically took notes... is a different matter. Sooo all those people who wanted to pay the dude so they could keep taking notes... eh. They went all angery on patreon. Soooo patreon has to play the legal expenses to pay the nazists to sue patreon. Because that's how it works since patreon is a "big" company and the nazists are poor lonely people that need all the help in this poor harsh world. Patreon has been scrambling because it might not have the money to pay all the legal expenses for that many nazis to be able to sue patreon. Because... you know when nazis sue you... you have to pay to let them sue you. It's only fair. Right?

Once a year sounds both fishy and less practical for everyone concerned, except possibly Patreon itself. If it becomes an option, it’s not one I would choose.

TrixyTrixter

I would not do it as i don't even believe patreon will be around in a years time.

TrixyTrixter

I do not think you know what you are talking about. do you even know anything about the people that got banned? or are you just calling them nazi's cause they don't agree with you or made a joke you didn't like?
