Dragonstone

Wondrous Item, rarity varies (requires attunement)

This gemstone is a mesmerizing dance of colors, shifting and swirling in hues that mirror the lineage of the dragon with which it is associated. To hold it is to feel a potent resonance — be it the warmth of flame, the chill of ice, or the pulse of lightning — a testament to the might it carries.

Rarity and Dragon Forms. Dragonstones vary in rarity based on the age and power of the dragon form they allow you to assume.

• Uncommon (Wyrmling). Grants you the form of a wyrmling dragon of a specified type.
• Rare (Young). Transforms you into a young dragon of a designated type.
• Very Rare (Adult). Allows you to take on the form of an adult dragon of a given type.
• Legendary (Ancient). Bestows upon you the mighty form of an ancient dragon of a certain type.

Dragon Form. By holding or wearing the Dragonstone, you gain the ability to assume a mighty Dragon Form. Using an action, you transform into the specified dragon form associated with the Dragonstone's rarity, granting you all the might and majesty associated with that stage of dragon growth (as per the True Polymorph spell). This transformation lasts until you are reduced to 0 hit points, or you decide to revert to your original form using a bonus action. However, should you ever be separated from your Dragonstone, this transformation becomes impossible. If the Dragonstone is ever destroyed, it threatens your very life, and you find yourself at death's door, destined to perish in 1d4 days unless another way is found to save you.

Essence Integration. The Dragonstone isn't just a conduit to your draconic form; it is also a reservoir of experiences. Every Dragonstone has a unique resonance, linked to a specific dragon type. If you ever find and attune to a different Dragonstone, you inherit certain attributes of that dragon. This includes its type of breath weapon, innate abilities, languages, and even fragmented memories. However, essence, your very soul, merges with the new stone. This bond is sacred and irreversible.

Enduring Soul (Legendary Rarity Only). The bond you share with your Dragonstone is so profound that it defies death. As long as you are in possession of your Legendary Dragonstone, death cannot claim you permanently. If you suffer what would be a fatal wound, your form dissipates instead of meeting the usual grisly end. It takes 8 hours for you to be restored from this state. Your memories, abilities, and very essence remain untouched during this period. But caution is advised. If you are ever forced to attune to a different Dragonstone after your original is lost to destruction, the experience is traumatic. You would feel and function as if you had been brought back by the "Raise Dead" spell, and a piece of your soul would be forever lost, only to be replaced by the essence of the new stone.
