From what I remember the time period is the early 1900"s (post Sino-Russian war) the young girl is from the indigenous tribes of extreme northern Japan who lived isolated from the mainstream Japan. The "hero" is a war veteran and gets involved in a treasure quest that the girl somehow is a key element in the solution. So you have an adventure quest, good guys, bad guys and others in between, along with the vet learning about nature from his partner, the young girl. A second thread to the puzzle is how the girl part of the quest and how does her past become part of the puzzle. Dangerous moments, humorous moments, fights and what is important about the....(tattoos ?).
