Snake vs Thorfinn is always amazing. Keep in mind that this was Snake's first real fight in who knows how many years so he was probably rusty, and he had just got done running all the way there after leaving his horse so he was probably already pretty fatigued. This was also Thorfinn's first real fight in years on top of being conflicted about what he needs to do in this situation so Thorfinn is also not at the top of his game here, and even when he was fighting his only real challenges were Thorkell and Askeladd so it's been a while since Thorfinn has fought a skilled opponent too. "Miklagard" as Snake called it was the Viking name for the city of Constantinople in the Byzantine empire. So we can pretty well guess that Snake was some kind of warrior protecting Constantinople. More likely he was part of the Varangian guard which was made up of elite warriors (mostly vikings) whose responsibility was to protect Byzantine emperors. Gardar's death is such a beautifully directed moment from a cinematic standpoint. His younger self driving the carr down the road with the lines of slaves on either side and him finally being freed from it all. Gardar's younger self meeting Hjalti in his version of heaven (which also confirms that Hjalti has perished at some point) is one of the most heavy hitting moments of the season.
