(monitors beeping)

GORDON: (reading) He held on tightly to the wheel, and thought about the moment when he had truly thought he was going to die. He remembered the image of his daughter that had come to him, and it comforted him. Tears started to roll down his cheeks. Soon, the wind off the water dried them on his face. (closes the book, sets it aside, sighs) Where are you, Bull? 

(flapping of cloak)

BATMAN: Any change?

GORDON: No. He’s stable, but he’s not waking up. Thought a little Connelly would bring him out of it. 

BATMAN: (reading) A Darkness More Than Night. 

GORDON: Heh. His, not mine. I prefer Christie. 

BATMAN: Hm.

GORDON: What about you? 

BATMAN: What?

GORDON: Who do you read?

BATMAN: Casefiles. 

GORDON: Hm.

BATMAN: Doyle. 

GORDON: There we go. You, um, had any luck with Valentino? 

BATMAN: …

GORDON: (sigh) I figured as much. He’s just dropped off the grid. 

BATMAN: I’m, um. I’m sorry, Jim. I should’ve been here. 

GORDON: With this ban in effect, I think you’re spread thin enough as it is, (redacted). 

BATMAN: That’s no excuse. 

GORDON: Alright – then it’s not your job. Look, we appreciate it – believe me. But at the end of the day, this is our mess. Not yours. No one would say any different. Bullock sure wouldn’t. Just promise me something.

BATMAN: Of course.

GORDON: If you find him, you either call me or you bring him in yourself. There’s a lot of cars out there looking for him. A lot of angry badges. Hopin’ for a little, uh… revenge. I feel for them, I do. But this needs to be done by the book, and you can’t read the book if you’re seein’ red. 

BATMAN: I’ll make sure he faces justice alive. You have my word. 

GORDON: Thanks, (redacted). Maybe when this is all over we can get a drink or s -

(BATMAN is gone) 

GORDON: (sigh) Looks like it’s just you and me again, Bull. What do you wanna read now, huh? (stretches) The Big Belly Burger menu? Or Mr. Kim’s takeout? (grabs a book)
