New blog post trying to articulate a feeling I get in excessively party-centric DnD games.

Plot Claustrophobia in Managed Campaigns - Questing Beast

When I'm playing in an RPG and I can tell that the world is basically revolving around the party, I get claustrophobic. That's the only word I can think of that really matches the sensation. The boundaries of the world shrink. What creatures lurk in this forest?

Yes I really agree. For much the same reason I want to be able to walk over the hill and into the next valley only to find burnt towns, mutilated livestock and abandoned villages (this being the Referee telegraphing that I’ve walked into the area we’re the Dragons lair is giving the party the chance to leave or stay). The most notable negative I’ve noticed about party-centric “balanced” play, is that it leads to players meta gaming that because it’s party-centric and balance there must be a solution “built-in” so that they can succeed no matter the apparent odds arrayed against them. It’s a very poor paradigm for play and largely removes the risk-reward economy from play.
