Crystal heard the sound of the doorbell.  She was nicely dressed.  She was expecting company.  She put down her knitting out of sight and answered the door.  The house was clean, she had been cleaning all day and the dining room table was set.  All she had to do was warm dinner and it would be ready in just a few minutes.  She would use the time to entertain her caller with a fine wine and some hors d'oeuvres.

When Crystal checked the peephole and saw it was that very nice Jessica who sold her the Avalon.  Crystal was a bit disappointed.    "Probably stopping by to see how the car is working out.  How nice of her," she thought.

Crystal also noticed that Jessica hadn't taken her advice and bought some new well-fitting bras.  Crystal shook her head.  “That young lady would look much better if she would only take my advice,”  She thought.  She wasn't going to tell her again though. No need to insult the young lady.

"Welcome,” Crystal said brightly.  "The car is working out great.  I really like it."

"I'm glad," Jessica said, "but I'm here on another matter."

"What's wrong?  You seem upset."

"Have you seen my son, Jerry?

"I haven't seen him for two weeks."

"I thought he worked for you."

"He did, but he hasn't worked here for two weeks.  What's wrong?"

"I just got a message from Jerry.  He said that he met someone special and they are going to make a life for themselves."

"Really?"

"Do you know who this person is?"

"I don't have a clue.  I wish I could help you."

"Two weeks?  He hasn't been here for two weeks."

"Yeah. I wish I could help but I don't know what I can do."

“Did he just leave?”

“No, as you can see my home is quite orderly now.  You should have seen the state it was before Jerry come to help.  I didn't need him anymore so we parted ways.”

Jessica looked into the house.  It was very nice.  She saw the dinner table set for a dinner for two.  It was clear that Crystal was expecting company.

"I'm sorry to bother you."

"Oh, no bother.  I really liked Jerry.  He was a very nice boy.  He helped me when I needed him.  If you find him, give him my regards.”

Jessica left to look another place.

Jessica would be surprised and horrified to know that the elderly woman she had just talked to was actually her son.  She would next go to Jerry's friends.  They hadn't seen him in an even longer time than Crystal said.

Jessica wouldn't have been the only one surprised that she was speaking with Jerry.  Jerry would be himself.   He thought he is and always had been Crystal.  His former mind and life had completely been erased from his mind.  All that was left was Crystal.

Crystal's (Jerry) relationship with Stan (Professor Marcus) had blossomed since that night when he came to her door to beg her forgiveness.  Everyone at the university was happy for them.  They knew that Professor Marcus was lonely.

Crystal never returned to work after completing the course.  She took early retirement from her career after completing her History of Fashions class at the college.

Crystal closed the door.  She was busy.  Her Stan would be here soon. She had prepared a scrumptious intimate dinner for the two of them.  Stan was a bit older than she was at 67.  Crystal was only 61.  She loved him tremendously.  She suspected that they would get married soon.  At their age why wait.

Crystal sat on the couch and crossed her legs.  Instead of resuming her knitting, she wanted to get a smoke in before her man arrived.

Crystal thought it was a pity that Jerry was missing.  But if he found someone she was happy for him.  She really liked the boy.  She only wished that Jerry could be as happy with his new special someone as she was with Stan.

End.
