I enjoyed reading this one, and I approve, but I was interested to note that you have not mentioned the most significant part of what I experienced, every pap smear I've had: The incredible, extreme, ongoing pain that a pap smear causes. I'm told that I'm normal enough, physically, from a doctors point of view, but my first pap smear was a revelation: It was worse than period pain or a migraine. Much much worse. Worse than a multiple complicated fracture of the leg and ankle. Although it only lasted about a week all up, instead of six months. A day of barely being able to walk, and two further days of pain and bleeding after every smear. Yes, I have consulted my doctor (She did it to me!) and she shrugged and said, quite rightly, that the alternative, not knowing, was worse still, and recommended paracetamol, which didn't do anything. I can deal with pain, I guess, but I find it fascinating that no one ever warns anyone else about the incredible, excruciating pain of a pap smear. Why is it kept secret?

I could see people avoiding getting them done even more if they knew it would be painful. :/ Sort of like don't let them know the medicine tastes bad.

Whooooooah, that does NOT sound right. I would encourage you to get a second opinion from another doctor, because that does not sound normal at all. Have you researched Vaginismus at all? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaginismus Pap smears should be uncomfortable, but definitely not significantly painful. I've never experienced that and neither has anyone I've ever talked to about pap smears. I'm so sorry that's been your experience!

Perhaps. But here she is seeming to do a full disclosure, and leaving out the bit where a doctor lies to you with "this won't hurt a bit".... It terrified me, and there are sure to be other lasses out there who get scared as well... Don't you think?

That's the thing though... it *shouldn't* hurt a bit. It may be uncomfortable, but in no way should it ever actually hurt at all. The discomfort simply comes from the doctor or nurse getting the speculum placed correctly. I've had a number of other procedures after having a couple abnormal paps, including multiple biopsies & a LEEP. Now *those* can hurt, but a pap? Definitely not normal... If I were in your shoes I may actually be more concerned that my doctor just shrugged it off as if it were a normal reaction. You mentioned that the pain was, "Worse than a multiple complicated fracture of the leg and ankle." If it affected everyone in that way, don't you think they'd put you to sleep to do it, or something similar?
