Wow! This was an interesting movie to say the least. Definitely not full out horror but more suspense and psychological. Ethan Hawk was definitely creepy in this one.

The Answer's mic ended up going out on him at 1:11:45 so we apologize for that.

Thank you all! Hope you enjoy.

I completely agree, I thought it was going to be another cheesy horror film like One Missed Call or something so I went into it with zero expectations and boy I was surprised. I love this film, probably one of my favorites in a while especially horror film.

I went into this film with zero expectations, I thought it was going to be another cheesy horror film. Now I wouldn't exactly call this a straight horror film, to me its more of a very intense suspense thriller but I will say I did jump when we see the first ghost and I don't jump very often. I really like that we don't get much backstory on the grabber, to me that makes him scarier which makes his motivations more unsettling, we never know how he got like this, what he wants or what he's going to do and Ethan Hawk was amazing! I also like that we don't go right to the kidnapping, they take time to establish these characters, we see the bond that Finny and Gwen have, to me it's the heart of the story. You think throughout the movie that Gwen will be the one to find and save Finny but no she doesn't help him escape at all, he saves himself along with the help of the grabbers other victims, in the end that wasn't her purpose, hers was to help the police find the other bodies. They never would have known there was another house and wouldn't have looked across the street and who knows when they would be found especially after the grabber died. I like that the first one to call was Bruce, someone he actually had met before and end with Robin, an actual good friend. When Finny finally breaks and cries it's so heartbreaking, we had never seen him cry. We have seen him scared, angry and frustrated but not cry. And that was the perfect moment for Robin to call. He needed a real friend. I absolutely love when he's teaching him to punch and how they slowly synchronize and by the last one they are syncing perfectly, that is not easy to do! I also like that the kids don't forgive their father, it takes more then tears and a apology, they cling to each other, they barely even acknowledge him. A great fun fact, all the phones scenes the boys were really talking to each other, I believe they were in another room or something so they were able to work off each other. That doesn't happen very often.

He definitely had a similar ability. That's why the other kids and the grabber couldn't hear the other ghosts. One of the kids says it rang for everyone but they couldn't hear it, the grabber mentions hearing it ring too, he finally hears them at the end. But Finn also followed the missing kids beforehand, they talked about Vance Hopper and of course Bruce since he was the one right before Robin. I think it was because they were his age.

This movie reminds me of a movie from 2002. I know this was a book before. It reminds me of Living with the dead with Ted Danson. Ted can talk to the dead and a bunch of boys keep coming to him.

At first I was thinking that maybe it was in his mind/subconscious or side effects from some kind of drug but when the sister was riding her bike she saw them too and made her jump/scared her so much she fell off her bike so after that I was thinking they must be some sort of supernatural ghost/vision type things.

So a bit of background: this movie is based on the book "20th century ghosts" which is in turn composed of several short stories, including the Black Phone. It was written by Joe Hill, Stephen King's son Some of the stories are supernatural in nature, including the Black Phone. But I liked Oak's interpretation that Finn knew the previous victims and knew their character and used it to get out, by imagining the phone ringing. I loved your reaction !

I like Oak's theory about Finn knowing the victims and all that, I never thought of it that way. I personally thought that maybe Finn had some kind of untapped "ability" that allowed the victims to be able to contact him through the phone. With his mom and sister both having abilities of some kind, it isn't far fetched to think Finn is sensitive or capable of it as well right.🤷🏼‍♀️ Regardless, this movie was really well done. Glad to see y'all liked it 👍🏻

Yeah, it felt like a subconscious thing almost. But at first thought it's like, are the spirits there? Lol. Good mind thriller with a satisfying payoff.

This isn’t a genre I tend to like, but thought I would give it a try since you reacted to it and the trailer looked ok. I really liked the creativity in the story telling and found the movie engaging to watch. My favorite part was Finn taking control at the end. 😎

I don't know how I missed you guys doing this and how I missed this movie. Wow. This may be one of the best horror movies I've seen.
