What are your thoughts, folks? Was the teaser trailer enough for you to give this Live Action a shot?

Comments

Marquis keel

I’ve read the story isn’t completely the same the original director is doing it and it’s a reimagining

Marquis keel

The teaser only came out imo cuz pics leaked and they just said Fuck it

Rae

Been excited for this reaction ever since I saw the teaser yesterday. Can’t wait!

I'm Batman

I haven't seen the animated movies before but this teaser has me considering it. This movie looks like it's gonna be a good bit of fun.

Jaden Salas

Hiccup is played by Mason Thames, he was the main character in The Black Phone.

Alexiani Gollarza

I'm going to be honest, I'm scared about what they might do with these characters that I love so much and the only this I have to say about this teaser is: freaking hell, toothless looks incredible realistic, well done, perfect and just like he should look. Amazing work on him and the other few dragons we could see

Delphine Vdh

so hyped for this! the music at the end gave me chills

Kelly U

I’m soooo excited and was also very happy seeing Gerald playing his character. Can’t wait! Toothless looks amazing they did a great job even my 9 year old son was like “omg how did they make the dragons look soo real” lol he’s amazed too!

Elizabeth Green

So glad they’re bringing back Gerard Butler as Stoick! He’s such a staple in these movies and it just feels right! I may be one of the select few, but I hope they don’t deviate too much from the original. One of my biggest issues with Disney making live action remakes is that they change important and staple parts of the stories. I’m so happy to see it looks like Dreamworks won’t do that here ☺️. Dreamworks is quickly becoming my favorite company to look forward to and watch animated movies!

I'm Batman

If you recommend it that's reason enough for me, I'll check it out later today.

ShikShark

I just know this is going to be amazing in IMAX. I’m so excited for next summer!

tony !

You guys should see the other casts

Grumples

I'm really torn. The trilogy was damn near perfect and imo timeless without needing any reboot. On the other hand it'll be like watching it for the first time all over again. Color me carefully excited.

Nicholas Scala

The actor that plays hiccup in this is also the actor that plays Finn in the black phone !

Erlacine

I’m gonna be scared to see the gronkle. Das a big boi

Rae

Absolutely loved it! I was skeptical about them making a live action of this movie and I was so nervous about them changing Toothless. After seeing this teaser, I plan to go see this movie no matter what!

Alexiani Gollarza

I just saw them and I don't know how to feel, I was excited to see the rest and look for the guy because I don't know him but we are getting a new Astrid, I don't know how to feel😢 and I really liked the girl on the last of us so I guess we'll wait and see

ElmSt Reactions

Looks good and then they ruin it with the usual race swap crap. What's wrong with an all white cast ffs, make a movie with all back cast we don't care

LaLa

I'm closer to the 'why?', but I'm also curious. My hesitation stems from so far all we have seen is exactly the same as the original. Word for word, movement for movement. The CGI isn't even that far off from the original animation. So I'm actually hoping that there are at least SOME changes that they are keeping close to the vest. Otherwise this amounts to a cash grab, "Look! See! It's live action, totally different!". And IMHO that would be an extremely sad ending to such an amazing and beloved franchise. I want to be excited, and with the original director/producer in charge I'm cautiously optimistic about it. I'm still going to hold my adoration until I see the finished project. 💗

SD

This is far from the worst looking live action adaptation I’ve seen. But as a massive fan of animation as an art, it’s really frustrating to me that the only way these companies can seem to think of to make their animated movies better is to make them not animated anymore.

Marco Gutierrez

Nope, definitely not enough to make me want to watch it. Changing an animated movie to a live action and just doing it shot for shot is rather pointless. That said, the "writers" that they get these days so so talentless that they think changing a white Norse viking into a black girl is a contribution and not at all racist, so it's probably for the best that they aren't allowed to write their own original material. Still, I won't be giving money to a shameless cash grab. Hollywood needs to start hiring REAL writers with REAL ideas and not political activists.

DahGecko

I used to have this thought as well and still, in general, don't like most adaptations. But I kind of realized I was giving studios too much credit. I don't think they're setting out to "make animated movies better," anymore. I think it's as simple as a baked in audience + potential new audience = potentially bigger audience.

Alyssa Dyson

This really didnt need a Live action....like at all lol but as Ryan George would say....Money! 😬🤣💜

DahGecko

Womp womp. Normal people don't care that the fake viking girl is black now. Continue your strange crusade somewhere else.

Marco Gutierrez

And if normal was any indication fo what was right, then there'd be nothing wrong with Germans in 1940s Germany. After all, they were normal too. But we live in the real world, where vikings weren't black and where the culture is being hijacked to promote a racist ideology that "normal" people buy into because their overlords tell them they're racist if they don't.

Alyssa Dyson

Its not a historical drama based on Vikings...its a fantasy movie with Dragons and you're worried about someone's skin color? That's wild.

squish

I'm not keen on live-action remakes, I find they don't add anything to the originals and I'm also a big animation fan so that aspect missing is always a shame for me. Having said that, I just watched this with you for the first time and got goosebumps when I saw Toothless so I might watch it just for him :D

Amanda P

Honestly the trilogy are some of the best animated movies of all time imo, so also highly recommend!

DahGecko

Also lol, lmao even, at you comparing cartoon characters being changed in live action to, uhm... let me check my notes... ah yes, "the Germans in 1940s Germany." You absolutely lost it, brother. Good luck finding it.

Marco Gutierrez

Riiiight, so you're fine if we just change people in Black Panther to be white, right? There won't be any outrage on your part? Come on people, you can't seriously think the rest of the world is as deluded as you.

Marco Gutierrez

Nope, didn't compare those two things. Boy you people jump through more hoops than dolphins. Learn to read and try again.

Alex Boatman

It's the same writer and director, I doubt he's trying to "do it better." It's a way to tell a same story he loves in a new medium with the potential to bring in a whole new audience for a beloved franchise. The first movie came out in 2010, I bet there are a lot of kids under 14 that would love to be introduced to HTTYD. And I bet a lot of them are going to end up watching all the animated films before June 13th as well. And we can't know if this is a shot-for-shot remake based off of a TEASER trailer alone.

Breezybaby

Im so excited about this, I love the animated movies they still make me cry, this looks amazing and im going in with an open mind.

Alex Boatman

I have nieces and nephews that have been born since the animated films ended, so it's a new opportunity to bring a new audience to a beloved franchise. I'm gonna show them the original trilogy and then they'll be even more hyped for this movie.

Olive_Sandy

Looks like crap so will avoid. Wasn’t a necessary remake at all.

Natacha Pedersen

I've been going back and forth on this one since it was announced. I'm not keen on the idea it's a shot for shot so I hope they did change up a bit of the story. But on the other hand I LOVE the animated trilogy(oddly just did a rewatch-along with you guys this weekend!) so I'll definitely be in the theatre for it. I just watched a short behind the scenes from universal and the enthusiasm of DeBlois definitely made me more confident it'll be decent, it's clearly made with love and care.

Katie

I feel like it’s just so much more special being animated. Live action takes that away i feel :(

Natacha Pedersen

As an actual Viking ancestor(I'm Danish) I love the casting choice for Astrid. It's not like HTTYD is even remotely historically accurate.

Katie

News flash, she’s not a real person. She’s fake. You being mad at the casting choice makes you seem racist. Who cares?? She was originally voiced by a latina woman anyways lol

Natacha Pedersen

Thirding that you need to watch the animated trilogy. It's up there on my all time favourites alongside LotR 😅

Katie

You’re mad over the race of a fake character. Womp womp

I'm Batman

Okay now I have EXTREMELY HIGH expectations if you enjoy it as much as lotr lol. But seriously since you hold it that high up I'm extremely excited to watch it even more now, my all time 2 favorite IP's are Batman and lotr so once I'm done watching season 4 episode 1 of peaky blinders which I'm doing right now I'm gonna binge this trilogy the rest of the day.

Kyra Brown

I’m excited it’s honestly so beautiful httyd trilogy is one of my favorite animated movies I have high hopes 🥰🤙🏾❤️

Marco Gutierrez

Nope, it actually doesn't make me seem racist at all to expect an actor to resemble the character they're supposed to look like. And what does her voice actress being Hispanic have to do with anything? What, are you saying voices have race now? That's pretty racist on your part. Man it's hilarious how vehemently you people oppose anything that goes against the narrative and yet you think you aren't brainwashed drones. I can't wait till the pendulum swings the other direction and they start casting white people for black characters just to watch you flip out so I can call out your racist hypocrisy.

DahGecko

"Normal people don't care about cartoons characters having a different color of skin in an adaptation." "Well antisemitism was normal in 1940's Germany, think about that!" I don't know who you think you're fooling with these false equivalences, but it isn't me. You are fighting a lonely and, frankly, sad battle. Hope you can recover, brother.

Marco Gutierrez

There's nothing to fool, because I'm not equibocating them. I'm showing you that relying on the concept of "normal" is an absolutely ATROCIOUS way to justify your stance. "well hey us NORMAL people just think that group over there is subhuman, so what's wrong with you?" That's the level of your argument. Not a single person can justify why it's fine to change how Astrid looks but none of the other characters, nor cna they justify why this only happens in one direction but never in reverse. All ya'll can do is hurl insults, a textbook sign that you have no leg to stand on. Hope you see reason one day.

DahGecko

Can you tell me 10 ways that Astrid's character is tied intrinsically to her whiteness? You can't because there are none. Believe it or not, a lot of black characters have reasons tied to the very core of their character that relates to their blackness and what it means to be black. What about Astrid speaks to being white? Please tell me why, beyond the look of the character, she must be white. And please, don't hit me with "vikings were white." This movie doesn't take place in our world and there is no mention of Scandinavia. What about Astrid must be white?

Alyssa Dyson

yes! def start with the animated 💜 Im not hating on the movie it looks cool but if they do it frame by frame and dont do anything different it's kinda pointless to me... but i am happy that at least toothless looks amazing!

Anna Neiblum

i love everything except the hiccup casting.. i feel like they just didn’t get it quite right

Ana

Nico Parker is 80 percent white so yes she is a white woman

Marco Gutierrez

And yet in an interview with Glamour, she identifies as black and talks about that instead of claiming she's white or even mixed. So is it like a Kamala Harris thing? She's only black when it's convenient for her to be? Also love how you say this and I cna literally just find a tiktok saying exactly what you did, verbatim. Boy all you people get your news from the exact same source huh? Here, I'll bet you dollars to donuts that next they're going to start touting her as the first black Scandinavian, to which you'll say "yeah and it's perfectly fine for her to play Astrid even though she's black and looks nothing like her, cause the media told me it's fine". Shoo shoo, I've already argued eith the hive mind and poked holes in all of this.

Paul Yu

So I’m not sure how to feel about this, I have such a high regard for the animated trilogy and I’ve been disappointed with a number of live action adaptations. One encouraging point is that one of the OG co-directors is directing this one. Your review of the trailer however had me smiling the whole time 🤘😃

Paul Yu

Also, I’m with Oak - live action Thundercats!!!

Ana

Nah she can identify as black but her blood is more white. Also you keep crying when 60 years worth of movies were white washed. Majority of movies are all white casts and you don't see any PoC complaining and crying No only you racist whites who don't want to see PoC on your screens especially black people. The 20 percent black girl is not gonna change that the rest of this movie will be white. So you can stfu now. Because we don't care Can't wait to see Hermonie cast as a black or Asian girl also 😉😉😀

Marco Gutierrez

And there's the racism. Hey, thanks for proving me correct. I'm Mexican, by the way not white. I know that there's no possible way in your limited worldview that a "person of color" could ever disagree with you, but not all of us are blind sheep that just follow you to the slaughter. Fact of the matter is that over the last decade, it's YOUR ideology that has been dominating entertainment and it's YOUR ideology that has been leading to the declining quality of entertainment. You'll be crying soon enough when flop after flop after flop forces these activists out of their positions of power because studios want to start making money again. Take care now

Katie

You’re mad that it’s being played by a black person. So yeah that does make you seem racist. You’re mad over the race of a fake character. I wouldn’t care if they casted white people for black people. They are fake characters!!! They are not real. You shouldn’t care this much

Ana

87 percent of movies are all white cast. So I don't think people care

Marco Gutierrez

Well you're in the minority, because the vast majority of people that are on your side DO care about that and they scream bloody murder whenever you have a black character played by a white person. They don't even like black characters in anime being voiced by white people. All I'm doing is pushing back on all that nonsense. I care about the original designs and the original vision of the creator of the work, not about modern day interpretations that change things to fill "diversity" quotas.

tony !

It’s literally the best casting out of all of them??💀

Anna Neiblum

i don’t mean looks-wise i mean vibes, i feel like the actor just doesn’t have the humor and like goofiness that hiccup does. but that’s just me!

CT

@LoneCourier21 Astrid is fine, there are just sadly a lot of snowflakes who are upset over her casting. Mind you shes the one actor with traceable Scandinavian dna.

CT

@Elm who gives a shit. Stop being a ❄️

CT

Loved the trailer. I also love the casting of Nico as Astrid. It’s very fitting. Can’t wait to see her play in another great series! I already loved her in the last of us ❤️.

As a person of color and actor fighting for representation, i agree color washing isnt the solution to white washing. We need more original stories like Coco & Encanto, not culturally appropriate others and get second handed stories. Representation done right 💙

Kaley

I feel like with Live Action adaptations, you can’t win: if it’s shot for shot, people complain that there’s nothing new, and if they change too much, people complain as well. Also Nico Parker (Sarah in “The Last of Us” show), will be playing Astrid!

Coraima Corona Montijo

Literally had no idea a live action was being made till now

Bri

Seeing Toothless actually look like Toothless actually made me sooo happy. Like finally! Why couldn't Disney do this with Stitch? lol

Kirstine Aaen

I can’t stand live action remakes. They are nothing but an unimaginative cash grab. This remake will not be able to convey the same emotion and magic that the original did. It will simply be a pale imitation (just like Lion King, just like Mulan, just like The Little Mermaid). I’ll be keeping my money.

Kirstine Aaen

I’m with @Marco Gutierrez on this one. Nothing to add to the discussion, as no one seems willing to even contemplate what he’s trying to say. It’s like speaking to a wall.

Kirstine Aaen

@I’m Batman Promise me you’ll watch the original animated trilogy, not this washed down remake. At least at first! After watching the animation, you’re ofc free to do what you want. HTTYD is my all-time favourite animated trilogy, and yes within its genre, it’s up there with LotR.

ElmSt Reactions

Obviously missing the point, it's happening loads and people are getting sick of it, hence why alot of these woke shows have failed. I would say the same if it was the other way but I doubt the next black panther will be white lol

ElmSt Reactions

100%, instead of making new movies with new characters, they are lazy but still want their DEI to shine. White washing isn't a thing nowadays, there are plenty of black films and black actors out there for all to see

ElmSt Reactions

Ok so if a film came out about north Africa but the story was made up and the whole cast was white, then by your logic noone would mind as its not a historical drama based on north Africa. Yeah right 🤣🤣

Conor Moriarty

For me, I would rather them add some extra stuff for live action adaptations otherwise I don't really see the point of just copying the animated version. I feel like the live action Cinderella did a good job of adding new things and still staying faithful to the original.

Corey Weiner

For me… I’m so excited! Normally im on the side of dont do live actions but DreamWorks blew it out of the water with this one I think! And for everyone upset with Nico not having blonde hair, I think they should take the stick out of their butts… she looks amazing as Astrid!

Marco Gutierrez

Nope, I'm actually literally saying the opposite, but thanks for proving that you people can't read. I'm saying that you people are completely fine with whites being replaced with other skin colors and then call people racist for speaking out against that, but then you freak out when the opposite is done. Extending privileges to one skin color over others is LITERAL racism and that's what you people are advocating for. I don't care about skin color at all, what I care about is that the creator's vision is respected above all others. Nobody else has a right to change that unless the creator gives the work to them, ESPECIALLY if it's being changed by fascist idealogues.

Marco Gutierrez

Because the only option these people have is to try and shame and insult you into submission.

Marco Gutierrez

That's what the video game industry thought too, and yet Concord, Dustborn, and Dragon Age:Veilguard all bombed this year. Not to mention the damage that Assassin's Creed Shadows did to its reputation after going woke as well. Stop shilling for these corporations and stop fighting against the people who want our entertainment to be quality again.

Jessie

right? same. I hope it's not shot-for-shot either. Otherwise, what's the point? This does look amazing though.

J Knight

The creator chose Nico. He literally asked her to play Astrid and recorded her reaction. You care about YOUR vision. The creators of these shows and books are almost ALWAYS involved with the changes and cast. I suggest you do some research on who Dean Deblois is before you try to use him as a shield.

Marco Gutierrez

The creator is named Cressida Cowell, and she's a woman not a him. Clearly you're under some false impression that the director is the creator of the work, but he's merely adapting someone else's work onto the screen. You know, like how he did it mostly correctly the first time before all of this DEI nonsense came onto the scene? I'm sorry that you're still too foolish to notice thst these people are literally swapping sexes, races, and sexual preferences for the sole purpose of raking in cash from investors for pushing an ideology. It's literal paid tokenism and you're defending it because they tell you to. That's saaaaad
