Okay! By a considerable margin, the winner of the first GameClub poll is... Psychonauts!

Let me give you some historical context for this one. Psychonauts is the first game by Double Fine - a studio formed by Tim Schafer (Full Throttle, Grim Fandango) after he left LucasArts.

The game was made by a bunch of ex-LucasArts employees, with writing by Portal funnyman Erik Wolpaw.

Psychonauts has some leftover ideas from Tim's work on point and click adventures, but is ultimately a 3D platformer in the vein of Super Mario 64 and Ratchet and Clank.

The game was released in 2005, for PC, Xbox, and PS2. It was critically acclaimed, but tanked at retail. It has a cult following though, which has led to the announcement of a sequel, Psychonauts 2.

You can get the game on PC, Mac, and Linux on GOG.com and Steam. It's also available on PS4 via the PlayStation Network (US and UK links). You may be able to buy it on Xbox Live for 360? Either way, you can buy cheap Xbox (backwards compatible with 360) and PS2 versions on eBay or wherever.

Right, start playing whenever you're ready. Play as much as you want - you don't have to finish if you don't want to! I'll make a new Patreon post on Feb 26th where everyone can share their thoughts, and chat about the game!

Two questions: do we have to finish It? AND do you have a due date?

GameMakersToolkit

Good questions - play as much as you like. If you don't want to finish it that's fine. And let's go with Feb 26th.

Nice! Let's do this!

Woohoo! Can't wait

I'm excited! I've heard much about Psychonauts, but never tried it on for myself.

I've been wanting to play Psychonauts for a long time. Looking forward to using this to justify finally jumping into it!

Would you recommend taking notes while playing? Any ideas or aspects you'd like us to watch out for.?

Xbox owners who would like to play on the 360: can anyone confirm that the PAL version works all the way through? Original Xbox BC can be flaky with PAL games and alright on the NTSC versions (e.g. Panzer Dragoon Orta, Jet Set Radio Future)

GameMakersToolkit

I dunno - I'm just playing this first one by ear. So we'll see how it goes! Maybe the structure will change it future. But if you think notes will help you, please go ahead :)

One of my favorite games

It's usually on sale for a couple of buckeurounds on steam every so often, I make a point of getting it for friends - this game definitely made an impression on me.

I'm glad I tried to buy through Steam, as apparently I already own Psychonauts! Must have been in a bundle. (Just checked, wow Humble Indie Bundle V had a lot of good games in it: Braid, Super Meat Boy, Bastion, LIMBO, Sword and Sworcery. Those were the days).

Good excuse to try out the game for the first time!

I love this Game Club idea! Psychonauts was one of those games in my backlog that I always wanted to play, just never managed to get around to it. This is gonna be awesome :)

I'm interested to see if there is any difference in the perception of the meat cricus level which apparently got patched in the pc version. I played the emulated PS2 version on PS3 two years ago and that got quite frustraiting. Maybe pc players will complain less about this level than console players.

This is from the list on wikipedia which is quite accurate: "Raz's body texture is sometimes replaced with pause menu's background texture. Small, faint, vertical lines visible in the distance. Framerate may occasionally stutter." I don't know how frequent this problem is.

This is really a great game, i bought several years ago as a pc budget title (about 5$ in dvd format) and i was very delighted to play such masterpiece. It has several chapters that remains in your memory for very long. I can't choose my favourite level between Milkman conspiracy, Waterloo world or Black Velvetopia (the mexican painter level :-) ) I loved how consistent and fitted are all designs within each level to keep coherence, it's something that is very rare.

Having played both in the past, the tweak to the meat circus is not very big. Primarily they just give you a little more time in the escort and rising water sections, and you (mostly) never lose lives there, so you'll only get kicked back to the last checkpoint, never out of the whole level. It's enough to give a bit more breathing room, so the frustration isn't as present, but doesn't make the jankier bits of platforming any less irritating.

Well, I'm on holiday on the 23rd so I'll probably miss the talk about it. Installed and played about two hours of it today though and it's just fantastic. Had it sitting in my Steam library for ages and heard so many great things about it but I never touched it until today. Digging the humour, zany characters, creative art style and level design and I love that it feels so good to play. Definitely going to try to play as much of it as I can over the next couple of weeks.

Love this game. I came in late to this one; I played Brutal Legend and it became my favorite game of all time, and then my friend mentioned to me that the same team made Psychonauts, so lo and behold I gave it a go, and loved it to death. It's such a bizarre game with an equally bizarre art style. Now I'm with everybody else, excited for the promise of a sequel :)

I played it a couple of years ago but had to stop after a few hours. The gameplay just wasn't for me.

Probably won't get chance to join in this one, but will you be doing these Games Clubs monthly?

Started on Saturday and got hit hard by the final level blues on Sunday. This is really really hard! Still haven't beaten it. What a ride though!

Just the incentive I need to finally try this game out :) Double Fine just posted a short video about a location in Psychonauts 2 as well which peaked my interest https://youtu.be/sjirhAZsZNo

I just got my copy for ps2 a few days ago! I really need to catch up, has everybody finished the game already?

Anonymous

I only just bought the game on steam, I've been putting it off, but I should have it finished in time.
