It's been how many years since he fought and Thorfinn still got it

This show is truly something else, it asks the real questions

I do think its interesting to think about how whenever Askeladd shows up in this season, that's actually Thorfinn essentially giving himself advice and asking questions and coming to conclusions in his own head. And its comes in the form of Askeladd all because of those final words he said at the end of season 1 that had such an impact on him. "What does it mean to become a true warrior?"

There is a line from the manga that doesn't make it into the anime, where she call herself a wretched woman for being so selfish and blaming Gardar for everything. I thought it is a pretty significant line to paint her inner turmoil.

Vinland Saga was written to portray anti-violence themes, but at the same time, it questions whether peace can truly be achieve through anti-violence means. It'll be interesting to see how Thorfinn 2.0 will handle a world that's full of violence and war.

I just want to say that Arnheid's VA did a great job in this episode. That was an incredible voice acting right there 😔✊🏻 And also, you got the point! I also think that it's okay to fight someone for self defense or protecting someone. Just like Thors in S1, he didn't fight because he wanted to, but to protect his people and especially his son

Long post. Won't blame you if you don't read. :) Hey, I'm a big enjoyer of your reactions (not a fan of the word "fan", lol.) and I got a little extra money so I decided to sub or whatever. Vinland Saga is an anime that's become a piece of my heart that I'll hold with me all my life and I've really enjoyed your reactions. Let me talk about this episode.. Arnheid.. in my opinion, is the definition of the word "victim". And I don't use the word victim lightly. Especially since we live in a time where everyone wants to be the victim. But Arnheid truly IS a victim. She was a victim of greed, which caused her to lose her son and her husband. She's a victim of slavery, which now she has a child with her slave master. Sure she's accepted it but just because she accepts it doesn't mean she's not a victim. Every time I watch the scene with her breaking down and crying it just breaks me as well. I think one of the things that might be overlooked is how she had given up on any hope of returning to the life she once had. She accepted her new life as a slave and as the mistress of Ketil. So imagine the feeling when, after years of having moved on, you all of a sudden see your husband come riding in on a horse and asking you to escape with him. It must of been like seeing a ghost. All that hope you had given up on is now standing right in front of you. I'm sure we've all been there where we've given up on something, but have been introduced to an opportunity for that thing to present itself in the future again and give us that slight glimmer of hope. I feel like that's what Arnheid is going through. She saw her husband who she'd long moved on from and all those emotions and feelings.. all that hope came back. I do NOT blame her for going to see her husband. Two of my favorite lines and the ones that hit me the hardest this episode are where she says, "Perhaps.. perhaps I was dreaming.. Dreaming of a life as part of a family with Gardar and the child inside me." "Those eyes that used to be so full of confidence.. They looked so miserable." I'm sure one of the reasons she came to Gardar (outside of just loving him and wanting to see him.) was that hope. That hope that she would see him and he would give her the confidence and the belief that they could return to how they were. But I feel that once she saw his eyes she was hit with the reality of their situation. Another thing is that Thorfinn is seeing, first hand, the effect of what his past life decisions caused so many to go through.

Einer may of came off a little bit, inconsiderate when he asked, "Why would you do something so reckless by yourself?", but I think it's because he offered and wanted to help her but she told him to leave it alone. So I see it as him being like, "Why would you do this by yourself when you KNOW I wanted to help you?"

I'd gladly cause myself severe brain trauma to experiance this show again.

I love how both Thorfinn and Canute use their dead ‘fathers’ as their mental mentors. Except, Thorfinn sees Askeladd as alive and well, and as a guiding hand. Whereas, Canute sees King Sweyn as a decapitated head, almost stalking him and mocking him. Again they are such good foils to each other! I’ve said it before but Mayumi Saco is undoubtedly one of the best VAs I have come across. I sincerely hope in the future she does more anime or I come across her in another project. She is able to deliver one of the most realistic sobbing breakdowns I have ever heard. Arnheid and Gardar’s situation absolutely breaks my heart. It’s also the perfect bridge between Thorfinn deciding his ideals, to Canute’s arrival. Thorfinn’s ideals mean that his life is never going to be easy. But that’s why Askeladd called it a ‘battle’. This is his fight for the rest of his life.

ConLouis

woah, I never it saw it that way (about the former paragraph) Great catch! It kinda mirrors each of their ideologies in a way; where to Canute men are devoid of love and left by God so they, in turn, must help themselves by embracing it (Sweyn being decapitated pushing Canute to embrace the crown)—while Thorfinn understands that although there is hate within men, he also sees the good in them and their capability of change

Paras

That stance gave me full body chills
