Yeah, this is the ep when Yui realized that Hachiman will always choose Yukino.

The codependency is 100% at least an aspect of their relationship as it stands. There is codependency and there is interdependency (you called it healthy dependency in the episode). The "problem" with interdependency is that you first have to be independent and have an independent identity before you can become interdependent. Yukino has not achieved that independency stage necessary which is what Haruno meant when she asked yukino "Do you even have a self?". Season 1 Yukino might have seemed independent but she actually wasn't. As a Child, Yukino always wanted to be like her sister ("always hand-me-downs"). At some point her relationship with her family started to sour (probably because she felt like she was nothing more than a substitute in their eyes) and so she tried to desperately get out of her sisters shadow by adopting a persona that was deliberately as far removed from that of her sister as possible; season 1 yukino. The problem with that is that, because the reason for adopting that persona is still connected to her relationship with Haruno you can't rightly call it her own. This also connects to the student council presidency election arc: Yukino actually wanted to be president but she wanted to do it because it was something Haruno didn't do so while it hurt Yukino in the short term i still think it was a good thing that Hachiman prevented her (even if an independent Yukino might still have wanted to be president). After that arc Yukino actually does manage to disconnect herself from Haruno but it's only because she started to connect herself to Hachiman instead. In 2x11, after the school marathon Hayama points this out. Hayama says that Yukino has changed and that she no longer follows Haruno around (implying that she had been doing so up to now, even after she adopted her season 1 persona). Hachiman says that that is a good thing and Hayama says "So you haven't noticed". One the one hand this can be taken as Hayama referring to Yukino's romantic feelings for Hachiman (and that might well be part of it) but in the context in which it is said it makes more sense if he means that Yukino is now following Hachiman the way she did with Haruno. The thing about this is that Yukino is aware of this as far back as 2x9. Right after They have their little moment where she asks Him to "Save her someday" they have a little conversation where Yukino says that Hachiman and Haruno have something that Yukino lacks. This one is admittedly a little more speculative on my part but my guess is that she means that Hachiman and Haruno have an idendity.

2023-04-29 08:02:52 Even as non Yui fan that ending is always rough! She got to sing the ending and if you know the lyrics then those hit harder because it's in her pov. The reason why Yukino wants to do everything without Hachiman and Yui especially without Hachiman goes back to the the of season 1. Hachiman did the most throughout the story so far and his motivation was mostly if not always for Yukino. In that way it's unhealthy since Yukino doesn't grow from that and starts relying on Hachiman all the time. Yukino is not exactly like that because we know she's reliable but only if she gets challenged but never takes the initiative on her own. She's at her best when Hachiman challenges her since she respects him so much.

Pretty much think you're correct that Yukino is referring to identity in 2x9 - as shown by the fact that the opening of that episode includes Komachi's impersonation of Hachiman talking about identity.

Lukas

exactly. i've noticed a lot of people tend to overlook seemingly throwaway lines like that but the truth is that Watari-Sensei is increadibly deliberate with minor forshadowing and details like this.

its 453 words and there really isn't any way that i could shorten it without having to neglect the examples which are needed for me to make my point.

One of the best things about this show is the off-screen development of other characters. And it plays well into the main theme of the series.
