Your description of Roswaal's backstory with Echidna.. is very similar to Subaru's story of falling in love with Emilia. That's why he considers them both similar. Think about it. Both fell in love with a woman who saved them. As a result both had a conviction to protect this person. In Roswaal's case he lost that person, and so.. in his 400 year desperate struggle to bring her back.. he lost his humanity and developed this unhealthy mentality that "everyone is fundamentally weak and incapable of fulfilling their desires. Only someone with a strong conviction to throw everything else away for the sake of this one goal ONLY, can you successfully get what you want." A twisted parallel to Subaru's dedication to save Emilia and Rem. Subaru very easily could have become this inhuman monster as well. As a result of losing Rem, he considers himself weak and unworthy of both Rem and Emilia. Because of this, he clung to Return by Death as the one and only value he has. Throwing away his own life for the sake of saving the people he loves. Its not until the Witch's Tea Party with Satella, was he able to see the error of that mentality and restart his path anew. I doubt Roswaal can be swayed from his path.. its been 400 years after all. That's a long time of remaining in this unhealthy mindset.

One of my favorite things to do on a RE:Watch of this show is to look at the numerous ways that Subaru and Roswaal are mirrored. I won't go into everything until the season is over, but it is really extensive and purposeful. For instance the very first episode of the show where Subaru meets Emilia is titled "The End of the Beginning and the Beginning of the End". This episode with Roswaal's backstory meeting Echidna is titled "The Beginning of the Sanctuary and the Beginning of the End". The mirroring is pretty easy to overlook on the first watch since they seem like two entirely different characters, but this episode really gives you a whole new perspective on the character of Roswaal and his similarities/contrast to Subaru.
