I love this episode a lot. Knowing what comes later, it is not the easiest to watch along through Ottos journey again, but he is a king, and I am glad they gave him his backstory. The arguing is such a beautiful one, although Subaru, in my taste, counts a few too much physical reasons why he loves her, Rem was able to do that in a much sweeter way. But still, he has grown a lot since that time they argued in the royal city. There he was full of himself while at the same time hating himself, trying to look good to others first. Here he is showing genuine love and support for Emilias sake, while also honestly considering his journey of self love.

Really cool episode. Remember in one of the paths Subaru failed in, when Puck reverted to his true form, he said "You don't understand how important is a promise to a Spirit Arts user" speaking about Emilia; it's part of why Emilia is so intent on people keeping promises. The other part, which is just as important to her, you'll get to learn soon. Thanks for the reaction! Glad you appreciated this episode~

Yeaaaaaah subaru still lacks tact your so spot on about your comparison to how Satella says “I love you” to him. I think he acknowledges he was fumbling too in the moment he thinks back to his moms advice. He was already dropping the ball when he was getting frustrated cuz she wasn’t getting it. He does genuinely love her but he’s not good at articulating that. He’s never really been good socially after all but he’s gotten a little better compared to the last time they had this convo. Where goes off the rails after his fight with Julius. Also yessss OTTO 🗣️ he a real homie fr like bro was giving it his all! They were destined to be bros it’s crazy to cuz subaru has known him for a lot longer than he has known him. It’s kinda like rems situation where not to long ago he tried to kill him back when they were running from the white whale 💀 they’ve bonded so much now tho it’s so wholesome seeing this. Re zero also proves that you don’t need to have a strong character to have cool moments or “fights”. The OP song playing while Otto was dealing with Garf was so great I LOVE that op song so much it’s so much hype.

This season is full, I mean FULL of character parallels and character shadows throughout the whole cast. They all cross over in different ways too. I can't wait until the end of this season. But thematically I have heard it said that "Parent and Child" is the most thematically important episode of the season. On this rewatch I'm starting to see it more and more.
