I WAS NOT PREPARED WHAT THE HELLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Comments

ThaDoubleB

Yeah, not much you can do to prepare for your favorite character getting turned into a pretzel. No episode of any anime has ever had the impact that this did, it is just incredible and horrifying.

Tbf if he didn't go back here everyone would be dead. And I know Subaru is really frustrating to watch right here but growth will come.

Hans Santoso

welcome to re zero :)

Subaru's a really interesting character. Because of what he knows, he sees everyone else as helpless but at the same time, he himself is helpless which leads him to act in annoyingly arrogant ways. But the trauma he experiences is so fucked up that you still feel bad and understand him while still being frustrated by the way he's acting.

Benjamin Sones

Subaru is in a dark place in this pair of episodes (and in the last pair, too), and making bad choices and just generally being kind of a jerk. And you can kind of see how he got here, with all the trauma he's been through, but I don't think you are meant to *like* it. He needs someone to slap some sense into him and, well, that does happen (in a pretty brutal way).

Jev Cor

Yeah this is a tough one, I dunno what it says about me that this is also the episode that got me completely hooked. 😅

Benjamin Sones

And while his behavior is incredibly frustrating, he's HALF right about one thing: there is a pretty powerful thing that only he can do. The problem is that while Return by Death can give him another chance to solve problems, it can't actually solve the problems for him, because he's not the white knight that he believes he is. And actually, rewatching this episode, I think his facial expressions when he's talking about being the only one who can save Emilia suggest that he doesn't really believe it, either--it's more like something he *wants* to believe. But it's not true, and what he really needs to do is learn to trust and rely on other people (including Emilia).

Benjamin Sones

Really, I think the theme of this current arc is "Subaru learns some very hard lessons about trusting and relying on the people around him."

Benjamin Sones

And we also finally meet Betelgeuse Romanée-Conti... DESU! (The voice actor is Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, who also plays Inosuke in Demon Slayer).

Mambako

So so tough to watch every time, especially the torched Rem just made me cry… This arch just went to the whole different level of darkness.

Carlos Gunn

Yeah that episode ending left me speechless first time I saw it as well

Red UwU

Yoshitsugu Matsuoka is the va for betelgeuse. Bro is an og, he's literally in everything. His performance as this character is one of my favorites in any anime.

Red UwU

Yep, Kirito's too. If you search up his name and an anime he's probably in it.

Yeeah this certainly is an interesting arc. Subaru is in a dark place mentally. The one person who he clung to as a place to belong and feel needed has left him, once again leaving him helpless. You'll notice he has a tendency to think he is a useless pathetic good for nothing loser, which is a driving force to why he is trying so hard. Forcing himself into the role of protecting Emilia as her knight. On top of the fact he's starting to view Return by Death as a cheat card to make his mistakes and problems go away, its all an entirely unhealthy mindset to be living in. Subaru definitely needs a slap in the face and reality check, which he unfortunately gets in the later episode. Despite whatever happened to the village and the mansion not being Subaru's fault, of course you know he's gonna blame himself. He's spent the last two episodes proclaiming to be this knight who can save everyone.. only to have this happen. Its almost a cruel punishment that the world is bestowing on Subaru. Yes its traumatic and no one should need to see that. But at the same time, it had to happen to have *something* settle in him. He's not an overpowered knight who can save everyone. He's just Natsuki Subaru. A simple teenager. A human. A harsh lesson for sure. But he needs to learn to trust other people and rely on other's strength.

Yes, you get Subaru’s character, at least what’s been revealed so far. A lot of people misinterpret his actions as him having a big head or over sense of self-importance, but it is actually the complete opposite. “So you think I’m a useless piece of trash too” is the biggest peek into Subaru’s mental state the anime gives, but it is extremely telling. He wants to be important, needed, and useful to someone, but he doesn’t think he is at all. That’s why he wants something to go wrong at the mansion (this is clearer in the novels.) so he can fix it with RBD. It’s why he feels so extremely guilty and responsible, because obviously he didn’t want THAT to happen, but he definitely wanted to be needed there.

Surprised to see nobody talking about the ending. The track that plays during this unique end-credits is called Requiem of Silence. Imo it's one of the most haunting and beautiful soundtracks ever composed. I think it's that moment as well that really defines what Re:Zero is. It has happy moments, but ultimately what Subaru is facing against is absolute despair. Watching Puck rise from the building so forlornly... Re:Zero doesn't do everything perfectly, but this can proudly stand as one of the best episodes of television (not just anime) ever made.

Spoiler…it isn’t immediately apparent who/what the figure is at the end of the episode.

Requiem of Silence is absolutely a masterpiece. A MASTERPIECE. In fact, that track on top of the absolutely cold ending of the episode, and the Kurosawa credits rolling has this in my top five episode endings in an anime ever. Really under appreciated directing throughout this entire arc.

Loved this reaction! Uncle Iroh once said “Pride is not the opposite of shame, but its source.” In regards to the first half of this episode, Subaru can absolutely make some frustrating decisions, more often than not in this arc especially, but I find that too many people tend to misplace where those decisions come from and just chock him off as a delusional egotist. They’re wrong. His issues aren’t because he thinks he is the greatest thing since sliced bread. He says these platitudes and jokes about his desires, but that’s such an obvious and shallow cover for why he’s really trying so hard. It’s because he is ashamed. It’s because he doesn’t feel special. It’s because he doesn’t feel strong enough to protect those he cares for, and he wants desperately to prove that inner voice wrong. Thrust into this new world with this insane power, he feels he SHOULD be better than he is. Both what he’s consumed from media back home, as well as what people in the current world around him are saying and are capable of, it all makes him feel woefully inadequate. He couldn’t even get Rem and Ram to trust him in his first several ‘play throughs’. He feels utterly useless and the few victories he’s gotten have been very hard earned, so it builds the thought that he CAN brute force his way into being great, into being a hero, into being the one to protect Emilia, simply by not giving up. Yes, it’s toxic, but it’s also a hundred percent understandable for a recluse and a teenager. This brings us back to the quote from Iroh. Subaru is not acting prideful or arrogant because he thinks he’s the god given, woman loving, entitled savior of the world. He’s lashing out and being prideful because he feels incredibly ashamed by his own inadequacy. Is it any wonder Sloth asks if he is Pride? As for the second half of the episode… wow. Even on an uncountable rewatch, it still hits so hard. The directing (framing/composition, pacing, etc) sucks you in and the time flies by as you just stare in increasing stress and anger and genuine horror at what’s unfolding. Really enjoyed seeing Alana taken aback for ten minutes straight, not gonna lie. 😂

I love how everyone has a mental breakdown after Subaru’s head rolls off and the credits roll. The show was dark before, but then goes even harder

Christopher Kim

Betelgeuse the same VA as Inosuke from Demon Slayer

Valoa

Honestly a jaw dropper moment i was full-on hooked after

Sean Mcguinness

This anime should be renamed "Subaru has a not so great time"
