Serie tells Fern that she passes; my heart is full and i place my hands on my face. the ending starts, Frieren standing near a gravestone; my heart sinks and i get choked up. ::and you just have to say that you're fine when you're not really fine...::

The Himmel meeting Frieren reveal was such a great emotional gut punch scene. There's a couple things I wanted to point out since I'm not sure you picked up on the implications. Serie's mana appears about the size of Frieren's unleashed mana from episode 10's Aura battle. The fluctuations mean that Serie is suppressing her mana as well which Fern becomes the first human to be able to detect. Serie in trying to recruit Fern basically tells her that she has the potential to become the greatest mage of all time. I got chills when Serie said that as I pictured 1,000 years in the future mages searching for Fern the Greatest Mage's grimoires. If they don't announce season 2 in next week's finale, I'm going to have to go buy the entire manga because this story has been so incredible!! See you next week, Alana ^_^)/

Serie's fluctuations of mana means she is also restraining her mana like Frieren. What we can learn in this episode is Frieren's full mana is equal to Serie's suppressed mana..

Also, the garden in this episode is place where Serie made by Flamme's flower magic. We can see actually she cares her apprentice..

I think in a lot of ways neither Serie nor frieren really understand, Frieren is closer, but the feel I get it that when serie says I can take you to heights further than you can imagine" or some such, the real key is love, as angry as she gets, Fern loves Frieren, and Frieren is learning to love Fern with some difficulty...all the magic in the world, serie can't really connect with that, she has no understanding of it, it doesn't play into her plans, it's a "useless spell" so to speak to put it in her terms...Fern loves Frieren and it would take equal magic so to speak, to overpower that. And of those of us who've loved, we know that doesn't exist

Serie also suppresses her mana. She taught it to Flamme who taught it to Frieren. For humans it is almost useless skill, unless one has tremendous talent for magic in general AND for suppressing mana in particular. Because one needs to be seriously strong mage to not look suspiciously underpowered for their amount of training and also for person who doesn't have talent in suppressing mana, it might take well over 200-300 years to be able to do it on the level that allows one to deceive demons. Fern is just the first person that noticed that Serie is also suppressing her mana - because it seems ridiculous. She has so much mana that she can use spells that would drain good first class mage in less than 30 seconds for days. In her suppressed state her mana is about the same as Frieren's when it is completely unrestrained.

Also the biggest reason IMO Serie didn't pass Frieren was really because she knew Frieren doesn't care about the title. She needs it to pass check-point, but that is all. Otherwise it is a drawback for Frieren. And there are other ways of getting to the north than through checkpoint. Frieren after Flamme passed away, lived alone until Himmel found her. I understand why you're mad at Serie, but imagine how ridiculously painful it has to be to train human mages and notice that some of them start achieving peaks of magic.... and then they pass away moments later. At least from Serie's perspective, who is much older than Frieren. Her age is unknown but "reasonable" estimates I've seen are between 5.000-13.000 years old.

It looked like she wasn't concealing her mana because she has so ridiculously much of it that even when concealing her mana she has as much as Frieren does at full go.

I've noticed that a lot of people talk about how Serie is suppressing her mana, but no one asks 'why' Serie is suppressing her mana. (haven't read the manga yet, I don't know the reason)
