i agree that western music competitions just arent like this. I wish there were more shows like this though because its genuinely amazing to see what can be created when they are given the challenge

Right?! And, I'd have to admit that there are entire genres of popular music in the west in which it would be hard to have a music show on a grand scale like this. Because, to be honest, a fair amount of western music doesn't actually tell a story. It's one of the reasons I'm drawn to Kpop.

Yes, there are no shows like this in the western music world / tv world. I loved the 80s music videos and that's what I recognised when I started watching some kpop, but this type of show...the theatricality...the power...it's just unreal and I love it so much. I try to explain to people here, but kpop still has the stigma of being all about beauty and cuteness and they talk about girls in school skirts and boys in sailor outfits. I have a way to go with friends. ANyway, I agree with you about why kpop is so amazing. Loved Ateez' performance. They really drew me in. It's interesting though, that they ended up 1st with the expert votes, 3rd with the self-evaluation and youtube watches and 6th with the global votes. Big differences!! Oh and to support a previous comment: I too love that you read the subtitles out loud and pause. One of the reasons I started watching your reactions more.

I think it's a shame (to a certain degree) that kpop groups are referred to as boy groups and girl groups. I think my generation spoiled that. We had Insync and Backstreet Boys and all that, and sure those guys could sing, but they were honestly pretty average. So, boy groups were stereotyped as pretty faces with average talent and large marketing budgets who just produced the catchy/poppy songs they were told to produce and that weren't of the kind of quality to be fan favorites for years to come. And yeah, there were a ton of teenage girls with posters in their rooms obsessing over the guys looks in my days. I'm pretty sure that's why kpop is stereotyped as that sort of 'boy group' instead of getting the respect other musical artists get.
