Wow, I watched the movie before, but I mentally blocked so much away that the ending came as a shock again. I then instantly remembered that I didn't want to rewatch it, even though it's an amazing piece of art. It's like a Schindler's List in music form, style wise that is, not making any other comparisons.

There is a beautifully shot and incredibly well acted ballet film from the 70s called The Turning Point. Not well remembered nowadays, but it deals a lot with those same themes of a younger star replacing an aging star, but in a far less stressful way. (It was Baryshnikov's first film). It will make you WANT to see the ballet afterwards. George.
