Just finished part 2, so I have to share at least one of my own stories about these movies. When I was young (like, maybe 5ish years old?) I had a Rankin & Bass read-along record for The Hobbit that I enjoyed (if you're unfamiliar, its essentially a record accompanied by a hyper-abridged children's book with images from the R&B animated film, and the record reads the story to you and tells you when to turn the page). I was later gifted a paperback copy of The Hobbit (the iconic edition with the awful cover art that makes Bilbo look like Otho from Beetlejuice lol). Those were my only exposure to Tolkien growing up, but I always enjoyed them. I had heard the phrase "The Lord of the Rings" at some point, but was never actually exposed to those books; only The Hobbit. Fast forward to 2001, I'd just turned 19, and this exciting new movie is coming out which, to my knowledge, is based on the characters from The Hobbit. Great! Then, wait a second, "Frodo?" Isn't the main character's name Bilbo? That's weird. Well, whatever, midnight showing let's go! 3 hours later I'm looking at my watch and thinking: "jesus, how long is this going to be if they're that far away from the volcano still?" - I somehow DIDN'T REALIZE it was going to be a trilogy (because again, my brain somehow managed to never acknowledge/retain the existence of the LotR books at all), so when Frodo and Sam walk down the hill, and the screen fades to black, and then credits roll- well, you can imagine my confusion! LOL But I loved the movie so, SO much, and promptly went out and bought a big hardcover copy of the entire trilogy (but didn't read past Fellowship at first, as to not spoil future movies for myself! haha). I still have that edition on my shelf, with an accompanying copy of The Hobbit, and several other editions of the core 5 legendarium books. Man, so much love for this stuff. Can't wait to re-watch the other films along with you guys!

Feanor asked Galadriel for a single hair three times.. to make the Silmarils.. She refused him. thats why her gift to Gimli is so incredible.

Thank you George and Simone for doing this film and hopefully the other two. Amazing commentary, you are correct in stating that these films are the foundation of pretty much all western fantasy. Everyone will have an individual favourite but I don't think many will disagree that combined they tell the story in a perfect way.

Simone and George have either of you read the dragonlance books? They are based on D & D and introduced me to that type of storytelling and at the time became books that I would constantly think about and appreciate.

I like the idea of an occasional rewatch... it's something that doesn't really exist out there... everyone is "first time watching". But I did feel like rewatching The Abyss, and was surprised to see you guys haven't covered it. If you've not seen it, it's got an interesting development history. It was notably hard on the cast! One major cast member nearly died during production, and broke down afterward. Another cast member lost their shit and screamed at the director who demanded take after take. One of the cast refuses to talk about the production of this movie, because it was such an ordeal. And from a theatrical aspect, the CGI developed in this movie paved the way for Terminator 2. if you've both seen it already, it may be an option for a re-watch.. but I guess you'll be doing LOTR trilogy first... Which I'm also pretty okay about.

I don't feel there are that many cultural references or assumptions in the Lord of the Rings, to be honest. I've seen so many people who claimed not to be into fantasy instantly get and be drawn into these movies, also from non Western cultures. Maybe you're selling your father short, George, I think you can just show him them (assuming there's a Mandarin dub of course).

Guillermo Antonio Ricci Alvarez

Many do rewatch but they barely get views so is not that common, when there are 2 people they usually go with at least one of them is a first time watching

So glad you guys did this rewatch, hope you will do the other two movies as well! If you're interested in Tolkien lore which might answer some of your questions, you should check out the Youtube channel "In Deep Geek", he does great videos on fantasy worlds like LOTR, ASOIAF and The Witcher.

I say don't bother trying to ease your dad in to western fantasy. Just start with the best. As a comparison, I went into Mr. Vampire (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089371/) cold and fucking loved it. My Chinese GF explained some context after the fact, but that film was a blast just taken as-is. Same goes for some other more "fantasy" Chinese films I've seen but can't remember the names of. I think a good film is self-explanatory.

@George, mayhaps start with Princess Bride? I feel that's a light enough fantasy 101 movie.

Completely agree on this. You 2 have far more understanding of the lore of this world than 99% of people who watch and but love these movies. You don't need any understanding of western mythology to understand the themes and messaging of the series that make it beautiful; friendship, honor, courage, sacrifice, etc.

What always moves me as a silent detail is that Aragorn wears Boromir's bracers for the rest of his life. They are even present in Arwen's vision of mourning him at his tomb.
